The Yobe State Government has reopened two major markets in Gujba and Damaturu local government areas, previously shut down to prevent suspected food supply chains to insurgents operating in the region.
Security Adviser to Governor Mai Mala Buni, Dahiru Abdulsalam, disclosed this development while briefing journalists after a State Security Meeting chaired by Deputy Governor Idi Barde-Gubana at the Government House in Damaturu.
“After a thorough review of the security situation, I am pleased to announce the reopening of the Kukareta and Buniyadi markets,” Abdulsalam said.
However, he emphasized that the existing restriction on the sale of Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. remains in force. He warned that violators of this directive would be arrested and prosecuted.
Abdulsalam further announced the formation of a task force to monitor encroachments on farmlands and cattle routes by farmers and herders—a move aimed at preventing conflicts between the two groups.
He noted that while incidents of farmers-herders clashes have significantly reduced in recent months, proactive steps remain necessary to sustain peace and security in rural communities.
