A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, has called on non-indigenous residents and hunters’ associations across the state to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Showunmi, who is also the Convener of The Alternative Movement, made the appeal during a meeting with representatives of non-indigene associations and hunters’ groups in Abeokuta.
According to reports, the groups represented communities including Igbo, Igede, Tiv, Calabar, Edo and other non-indigenous populations living in Ogun State. Showunmi urged them to participate actively in the political process and support Tinubu at the polls.
The PDP chieftain framed the 2027 election as an opportunity for political realignment and called for broad mobilisation across Ogun Central, Ogun East and Ogun West.
Showunmi also appealed to non-indigenous communities to remain patient regarding the prospect of an Igbo presidency in the future. He argued that political aspirations should be pursued through democratic engagement rather than confrontation, while maintaining that he believes the South-East and other regions would have opportunities to produce future presidential candidates.
He further described non-indigenes living in Ogun as an important part of the state’s social and economic structure. Showunmi said their contributions to commerce and development should be recognised and pledged to support them when they face unfair treatment.
The mobilisation effort comes as political activity intensifies ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. Showunmi has in recent months publicly advocated support for Tinubu despite his membership of the opposition PDP. In September, he urged his supporters to begin grassroots mobilisation for the President’s re-election and argued that continuity in government was necessary for economic policies to have sufficient time to take effect.
His recent position also follows earlier public statements in which he expressed confidence in Tinubu’s re-election campaign. Showunmi says that he supported Tinubu’s second-term bid, while stressing that acceptance of the eventual election result would be important to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
However, Showunmi’s position places him within a politically unusual situation, given his status as a PDP chieftain while actively campaigning for the incumbent president. The PDP remains one of Nigeria’s major opposition parties, while Tinubu is associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The wider political landscape in Ogun is also developing on multiple fronts, with parties and political actors already organising ahead of the 2027 elections. The PDP has separately commenced its campaign activities for the Ogun State governorship election, with Oladipupo Adebutu emerging as the party’s governorship candidate.
For voters and community organisations, the 2027 election is expected to generate increasing political mobilisation as parties, candidates and interest groups seek support across Nigeria’s diverse regions and demographic constituencies.
Obaland magazine will continue to monitor the political developments surrounding the 2027 elections, including campaign activities, party positions, voter mobilisation and the participation of non-indigenous communities in Nigeria’s electoral process.
