The Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Community, under the Office of the National Security Adviser, held a joint briefing in Abuja to highlight the successes achieved by the security, defense, and response agencies in the past year. Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, shared the significant achievements during the briefing.
In the fight against terrorism in the northern parts of the country, troops successfully neutralized 9,303 terrorists and apprehended 6,998 individuals involved in terrorist activities. Additionally, a total of 9,562 Boko Haram fighters and their families surrendered to the security forces. These efforts have greatly contributed to the decrease in insurgent activities and the rescue of 4,641 hostages.
The fight against oil theft and criminal activities also yielded positive results. A total of 1,437 suspected oil thieves were arrested, with 363 neutralized. Furthermore, 245 kidnap victims were rescued, and stolen crude oil products worth N91.2bn were recovered.
The Nigeria Police Force played a crucial role in maintaining law and order. They arrested 4,796 armed robbery suspects, 3,068 kidnap suspects, and 2,474 suspects involved in rape and sexual crimes. Additionally, 1,213 suspects were apprehended for unlawful possession of firearms. The police also rescued 1,713 kidnap victims and recovered 1,465 vehicles/motorcycles, 2,566 firearms, and 19,310 rounds of ammunition.
The efforts of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in combating economic and financial crimes were commendable.
The EFCC secured 3,412 convictions and recovered substantial amounts of money in different currencies. This included N161,642,239,242.30, $43,835,214.24, £25,365.00, €186,947.10, and other currencies. The ICPC also made significant progress, with 131 investigations and 18 convictions.
The Nigeria Customs Service played a vital role in revenue generation, generating approximately N4tn in the past year. Their efforts in national security and anti-smuggling operations led to significant seizures of contraband goods, illegal arms, and narcotics.
These achievements highlight the dedication and effectiveness of the security, defense, and response agencies in ensuring the safety and well-being of Nigerians. The collaborative efforts of these agencies have contributed to the overall security and stability of the country.
