A tragic incident occurred in Lagos State on March 7 2024, when a tricycle rider lost his life after a refuse compactor fell from a bridge in the Surulere area. The incident took place in the evening and involved a truck owned by the Lagos Waste Management Authority. According to reports, the truck was crossing the Shitta bridge when it experienced a mechanical fault while in motion, causing the driver to lose control. As a result, the truck collided with a Kia Saloon car on the bridge. The impact of the crash caused the compactor to detach from the truck and fall down the side of the bridge onto a mini commercial bus and a tricycle. The tricycle rider, whose identity is yet to be determined, tragically died on the spot. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident and stated that they received a distress call late in the evening. The emergency response teams quickly arrived at the scene and worked to recover the remains of the deceased. The LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, provided additional details, explaining that the compactor truck had suffered a mechanical error, resulting in the loss of control. The crash caused significant damage to the vehicles involved and led to the unfortunate loss of life. The LASEMA response team, along with other agencies such as LASAMBUS, LASTMA, and the police, were present at the scene to manage the situation. The vehicles were eventually moved to the Iponri Police Station for further investigation. It is important to respect the privacy of the deceased and their family during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic accident.
