In the ancient and modern Olympics, the significance of the flagbearer of every given nation has a message to sell and so it is in our today’s politics. His or her role is symbolic, just as the flag.
In the magnanimity of a political party, a person is elected to contest in an election. Such an individual must and should have shown exemplary quality that is exquisitely unparalleled with the willing mind to deliver on the party’s manifesto.
Sen. Monday Okpebholo, as the flagbearer of a larger political party in Africa, stands out. His emergence is a relief and at the same time, a message of hope to the good people of Edo state. His acceptance to take over the state on behalf of the APC speaks volumes of his resounding credibility and overall acceptability.
What a moment to have a dynamic candidate whose political antecedent silences the arrogance, rascality, delusion of grandeur, conviction, and vexatious misrepresentation of the social and economic crises that are eating deep into the fabric of society. The APC candidate in the next gubernatorial election is not just a person out of the blue but a sitting senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
By his current office, there is no denying of his exposure, experience, and understanding of the political dynamics and leadership qualities deserving of the heartbeat. He has shown loyalty, he has contested – testing the election waters and representing a vast group of Edo citizens at the Senate, and by extension contributing to the shaping and building of Nigeria.
As a silent achiever with a personality of inestimable value, Edo state cannot fall short of such a man who can deliver on his promises – holding high on his words and representing the interest of the people.
The next election is a litmus test and by the current level of heightened poverty, red alert insecurity, disrespect and disloyalty to respected institutions occasioned by sheer display of braggadocio, the result will overwhelmingly up the scorecard of the electorate as they vote the choice candidate.
