Osun SSG Arrest: Speaker Egbedun Alleges CP Ordered Igbalaye’s Detention After Being Booed at INEC Forum!

The arrest and detention of Osun State Secretary to the Government, Teslim Igbalaye, has triggered a fresh political and institutional dispute in the state, with Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, alleging that Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Gotan ordered the SSG’s arrest after being booed by members of the public at an Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, stakeholders’ meeting.

Egbedun’s account directly challenges the explanation provided by the Osun State Police Command, which said Igbalaye and five others were arrested during a raid based on intelligence about suspected criminal activities and that items recovered from the SSG’s residence raised concerns over possible electoral offences.

The competing accounts have emerged against the backdrop of heightened political activity and security concerns in Osun ahead of the state governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. The dispute has consequently raised broader questions about policing, political neutrality, due process and the conduct of security agencies during a sensitive election period.

Speaker Gives Account of Events

In a statement personally signed on Thursday, Egbedun said he was present at an INEC stakeholders’ meeting alongside Osun State Deputy Governor and Igbalaye when the incident that he believes precipitated the SSG’s arrest occurred.

According to the Speaker, Commissioner Gotan was booed by citizens while addressing or appearing before participants at the meeting. Egbedun said that after the police commissioner returned to his seat, Gotan looked towards the direction where he, the Deputy Governor and the SSG were seated.

Egbedun alleged that Igbalaye laughed at the incident, after which the commissioner picked up his telephone and began making a series of calls.

The Speaker said he became concerned by what he was observing and told Igbalaye that the police commissioner had ordered his arrest. According to Egbedun, minutes later, the SSG received a phone call informing him that police officers were waiting at his residence.

Igbalaye subsequently left the meeting, according to the Speaker’s account. Egbedun said the SSG later informed him that he had been invited to the State Criminal Investigation Department over items allegedly recovered from his compound.

The Speaker described the alleged action as an abuse of police authority and argued that the circumstances surrounding the incident should concern Nigerians committed to democratic governance and the rule of law.

However, Egbedun’s account is an allegation and has not been independently established as the factual cause of the police operation. The police command has offered a substantially different explanation.

Police Account: Intelligence-Led Raid

The Osun State Police Command said its officers acted on intelligence indicating that members of a suspected criminal gang were hiding in Osogbo.

According to Police Public Relations Officer Abiodun Ojelabi, the operation led to the arrest of six people, including Igbalaye. The command identified the other detainees as Akande Taiwo, Oladele Abiodun, Adeyemo Lukman, Olaoye Muftau and Aderemi Musliu.

Police said one of those arrested, Oladele Abiodun, was on its watch list in connection with alleged criminal offences.

The command also reported the recovery of ₦4,810,500, a Dynabook laptop, a photocopier, a printer, two Permanent Voter Cards and a voter register covering Wards 1 to 15. Police said the recovered materials were secured for forensic examination and further investigation.

The command said the presence of cash and voter information at the location raised concerns about possible electoral offences. Investigators, according to police, were examining possible vote-buying under Section 121 of the Electoral Act 2022, criminal conspiracy, harbouring or concealing a wanted person and any additional offences that might emerge from the investigation.

Police stressed that the investigation remained ongoing and that the recovered exhibits would be subjected to further scrutiny before conclusions were reached.

That distinction is important. An arrest or police investigation does not in itself establish guilt, and the allegations against the SSG and the other suspects remain allegations unless and until they are established through due legal process.

Osun Government Rejects Police Explanation

The Osun State Government has strongly rejected the police narrative and condemned the operation.

In a statement signed by Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Kolapo Alimi, the government accused the police of invading the SSG’s residence without a proper search warrant and described the operation as part of a wider pattern involving senior government officials.

The government said the SSG’s residence was entered by a combined police team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations. It alleged that people found at the premises were arrested and that members of the SSG’s family were taken away during the operation.

According to the government, the incident followed an earlier raid on the residence of the Commissioner for Energy in Ikire and similar actions involving other commissioners and top government officials.

The state administration accused the police command of partisan conduct and argued that the alleged targeting of government officials posed a danger to the credibility of the electoral process. It called on the Inspector-General of Police, the National Security Adviser, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other authorities to intervene.

The government’s allegations are also contested claims and should be distinguished from facts independently established by investigators or a court.

Political Tensions Deepen Ahead of Osun Election

The dispute cannot be separated from the increasingly competitive political environment in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The state has already witnessed disagreements over political violence, policing and the neutrality of security institutions.

In June, national and state lawmakers affiliated with the Accord Party called for the redeployment of Commissioner Gotan, accusing him of partisanship and failure to effectively respond to political attacks. Speaker Egbedun was among those who made the demand. The lawmakers alleged that the police commissioner had not adequately demonstrated neutrality in handling security matters. The claims were denied by political opponents, while other reports have also documented competing allegations of politically motivated violence in Osun.

The disagreement over Gotan’s conduct therefore predates the arrest of Igbalaye.

Earlier in July, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu visited Osun and warned that the police would pursue those involved in violence as the state approached the governorship election. The IGP said he had received complaints concerning the security situation and allegations that some suspects were hiding within government facilities.

The context is significant because allegations of partisan policing can undermine public confidence even when security agencies are acting on genuine intelligence. Conversely, accusations of political persecution can also undermine legitimate investigations if they are made before evidence is fully assessed.

For Osun residents, the credibility of the security architecture will therefore be tested not only by arrests, but by transparency in investigations, equal application of the law and the willingness of authorities to provide evidence supporting their claims.

Why the Contradiction Matters

At the heart of the controversy is not simply whether Igbalaye was arrested, but why he was arrested and whether the process complied with established legal and professional standards.

The police say the operation was intelligence-driven and connected to suspected criminal and electoral offences. The Speaker, meanwhile, claims the arrest was ordered in response to a political confrontation at a public meeting. The Osun government has separately alleged that the search was conducted without a proper warrant.

These are materially different narratives.

If the police version is substantiated, investigators will need to establish the provenance and intended use of the recovered money, voter materials and other exhibits, as well as any connection between the individuals arrested and alleged criminal or electoral activity.

If the government’s allegations of an unlawful or politically motivated operation are substantiated, that would raise serious questions about the use of police powers and the protection of constitutional rights.

Similarly, if Egbedun’s account concerning the alleged retaliatory motive is to withstand scrutiny, evidence beyond his personal observation would be required to establish that the police commissioner actually directed the arrest for that reason.

This is precisely why credible investigations and due process are essential.

Electoral Integrity at Stake

The unfolding dispute has implications beyond the immediate confrontation between the Osun government and the police command.

With the governorship election approaching, confidence in the neutrality of security agencies is particularly important. Police officers are expected to protect citizens, enforce electoral laws and prevent violence while avoiding partisan conduct.

The police command has maintained that it will enforce the law without fear or favour and has urged citizens to remain calm and provide useful information to security agencies.

The APC campaign council, meanwhile, welcomed the raid and argued that it supported its earlier claims that the ruling political camp was involved in attempts to influence the election. The party called on security agencies to continue investigating credible intelligence.

That response further demonstrates how quickly security operations can become politically interpreted in the highly charged environment surrounding the election.

The proper response, therefore, should be transparency rather than rhetoric.

Need for Independent Scrutiny

Obaland Magazine believes that the competing claims surrounding Igbalaye’s arrest deserve careful scrutiny rather than premature conclusions.

The police should be allowed to investigate allegations supported by evidence, regardless of the political status of those involved. At the same time, public officials retain legal rights and should not be treated as guilty merely because they have been arrested or investigated.

Independent oversight will be important in determining whether the search and arrests complied with applicable law, whether the recovered materials were lawfully obtained, and whether the allegations under investigation are supported by credible evidence.

The Inspector-General of Police has an especially important role to play in resolving the growing dispute. A clear, impartial review could help establish the facts and prevent the controversy from further eroding public trust in the security institutions responsible for protecting the state during the election period.

The episode also reinforces a broader principle for Nigerian democracy: political competition must never become a substitute for lawful policing, and law enforcement must never become an instrument of political competition.

As the August 15 governorship election draws closer, Osun State requires security institutions capable of acting firmly against genuine criminality while maintaining visible neutrality. Political parties and government officials, for their part, must provide evidence for serious allegations and allow competent institutions to determine the facts.

For now, the reason behind the SSG’s arrest remains contested.
