Kidnapping and Tragic Discovery: The Case of Ekiti University’s Former Deputy Vice Chancellor

On August 1, 2024, the unfortunate news broke that Professor Olorunfemi Olaofe, the former Deputy Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti, was found deceased after being kidnapped on July 9. This incident has sent shockwaves through the academic community and the local populace, raising concerns over security and safety in the region.

Professor Olaofe, aged 79, was abducted from his residence, alongside his security guard. The details surrounding his kidnapping revealed that he was taken from his home and driven away in his own vehicle, which law enforcement authorities managed to recover shortly after the incident. Initially, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of N50 million but subsequently ceased all communication with the family, leaving them in a state of distress and uncertainty.

The discovery of Professor Olaofe’s body in a shallow grave in a remote area has left many questions unanswered. While there is speculation regarding the cause of his death—whether it was due to age-related health issues or foul play by the abductors—the police are conducting a thorough investigation. Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeniran Akinwale, confirmed the tragic news and emphasized that efforts are ongoing to exhume the body for proper burial.

In a statement, the Commissioner revealed that several arrests had been made in connection with the case. He suggested that there may have been an insider’s involvement, implying that the security guard employed by the professor could have played a role in orchestrating the kidnapping. This raises alarm about trust and safety, even amongst those tasked with ensuring security.

During the extended search for the professor, community leaders, including members of the Are Ekiti Progressives Union and the Ekiti Council of Elders, urged security agencies and the state government to intensify their efforts in locating him. The outpouring of concern from various organizations reflected the community’s desire for justice and security.

As the investigation continues, the death of Professor Olaofe serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by kidnapping and violence in the region. It has sparked discussions about the need for improved security measures to protect citizens, especially vulnerable individuals like the elderly.

The loss of such an esteemed academic figure leaves a void in the community, and it is hoped that justice will be served in due course.
