The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is preparing to execute an emergency evacuation and subsequent demolition of Block 3 of the barracks, which has been deemed unsafe. Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, highlighted the urgency of the situation in a statement released on Wednesday. Following a thorough assessment of the structure, officials found that both the barracks and surrounding buildings were in a dangerous state, necessitating immediate evacuation to avert potential loss of life and damage to property.

“The agency dispatched a response team to the location, and the findings indicate that the building and those adjacent must be evacuated with immediate effect,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. “We are conducting a response plan that comprises an assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition.”Lagos State Government Initiates Emergency Evacuation and Demolition of Police Barracks Due to Imminent Collapse

Under the leadership of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the government is taking proactive measures to address the situation. The statement further emphasized that the demolition is a precautionary step to prevent secondary incidents that could arise if the building remains unattended.

In light of the unfolding events, Oke-Osanyintolu urged the local community to remain calm and to avoid spreading misinformation on social media platforms. He reassured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and managed by the appropriate authorities.

Dayo Oyewo, a journalist with a background in sociology, covers city and crime issues for the Metro Desk, underscoring the importance of accurate reporting during such critical situations.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by infrastructure in urban areas and the need for vigilant maintenance and oversight to ensure public safety. The Lagos State Government’s swift response illustrates its commitment to protecting the lives and properties of its residents.
