On November 28, 2024, a potentially catastrophic incident was narrowly avoided on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos State when a tanker carrying diesel toppled and spilled its contents, causing considerable alarm among local residents and commuters. The event unfolded during the early morning hours, coinciding with the rush of motorists heading to work.
Witnesses reported that as the diesel spread across the roadway, some residents began to scoop up the liquid, heightening concerns about safety and environmental hazards. The quick response of emergency services played a crucial role in mitigating the situation, as confirmed by Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Taofiq’s statement highlighted the urgency of the response team, which included LASTMA officials and the Lagos State Fire Service, who quickly arrived at the scene. Their coordinated efforts were instrumental in preventing what could have escalated into a major disaster. He stated, “Earlier today, a fully laden diesel tanker experienced a spillage along the main carriageway of the expressway, posing an imminent threat to commuters, residents, and surrounding infrastructure.”
The immediate actions taken involved cordoning off the affected area to ensure the safety of both lives and property. In addition, LASTMA officials efficiently managed traffic flow to minimize disruptions while safeguarding all road users. Their swift intervention effectively neutralized the risks associated with the spill, including the potential for fire and environmental degradation.
Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, emphasized the importance of safety and adherence to traffic regulations during his reaction to the incident. Speaking through Taofiq, he urged tanker operators and transport stakeholders to prioritize safety protocols to prevent such occurrences in the future. Giwa stated, “This incident highlights the indispensable need for all tanker operators to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and safety protocols. The Lagos State Government remains steadfast in enforcing compliance with all traffic laws to prevent avoidable mishaps.”
