Nigeria’s opposition movement is warning that the government’s proposed tax regime could worsen the country’s social and economic crisis. The National Opposition Movement (NOM) says the tax measures are punitive and ill-timed, and will hurt ordinary Nigerians.
The group demands nationwide consultations with labour, civil society, and small businesses before implementing the tax plan.
NOM accuses the government of prioritizing elite interests over citizens’ welfare, citing corruption and state capture.
The opposition movement warns that pushing through the tax plan without consultation will have severe social and economic consequences. “You cannot tax hunger. You cannot tax poverty. And you cannot tax people into prosperity,” NOM declares
