In a bid to cut costs and recycle waste, some Nigerians are turning to unconventional materials to design clothes and accessories. Stove threads and empty sachets of ‘pure’ water are being used to create unique fashion pieces, from dresses to headgears and handbags.

While some people see this trend as a clever way to reuse waste and mitigate climate change, others are skeptical about wearing clothes made from such materials. “I was surprised and didn’t believe it at first when I saw the handbag made with pure water nylons, looking very colorful and beautiful,” said Mrs. Timilehin Abitfe, a tailor.

Some customers are willing to pay for clothes designed with these materials, citing the benefits of recycling and reducing waste. However, others are not convinced. “How do I wear something made of stove wool? It is ridiculous,” said Mrs. Maria Jimoh, a non-teaching staff in a tertiary institution.

Despite the mixed reactions, innovators are finding creative ways to repurpose waste materials. “I wonder where the creator got such talent from,” said Mr. Rotimi Adeduntan, a furniture maker, whose daughter wore a dress designed with stove thread.Nigerians Get Creative with Stove Thread, 'Pure' Water Sachets to Design Clothes

As the economy continues to evolve, Nigerians are finding innovative ways to adapt and create. Whether this trend will catch on or remain a novelty remains to be seen
