The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a 26-year-old teacher, Udeme Monday Stephen, over his alleged involvement in the February 24 gunfire incident that targeted former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other opposition figures in Benin City, Edo State. The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation, which has sparked intense political debate as Nigeria approaches the 2027 election season
According to reports, Stephen allegedly posted threatening messages on his X handle, claiming responsibility for the attack and warning of further violence against Obi. In one post, he wrote: “We warned Obi against his entrance into Edo State, but he mistook our resolve for his Obidiots online noise. Thank his stars he (Obi) survived this one”
The DSS tracked Stephen down using forensic analysis and arrested him in a covert operation. He is currently in custody and expected to be charged in court.
The attack occurred after Obi, former Edo State governor John Odigie-Oyegun, and leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) attended a political meeting in Benin. Armed men opened fire near Oyegun’s residence, riddling vehicles and parts of the compound, but no casualties were recorded
