“Osun Easter Mobility Boost: Over 600 Travellers Benefit from Adeleke’s Free Lagos Osogbo Train Service”

Osun State has recorded the successful transportation of more than 600 holidaymakers through its free train service initiative, reinforcing efforts by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration to ease interstate travel and support citizens returning home for Easter celebrations.

The special rail service conveyed passengers from Lagos to Osogbo, the Osun State capital, as part of seasonal welfare measures designed to reduce transportation costs and improve mobility during festive periods. The initiative, widely known as the Imole Free Train Service, forms part of a broader collaboration between the Osun State Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to manage increased passenger traffic during national holidays.

According to official statements cited by multiple Nigerian media outlets, beneficiaries boarded the train in Lagos after completing registration procedures, travelling at no cost to celebrate Easter with families and communities across the state. Passengers described the journey as smooth and well-organised, praising the programme for lowering the financial burden associated with holiday travel.

A Continuation of a Longstanding Welfare Policy

The free train scheme builds on an earlier festive transport policy introduced by previous administrations in Osun State and sustained under Governor Adeleke. Government officials say the continuity reflects a broader social welfare approach aimed at supporting residents amid rising transportation expenses and economic pressures.

Rail authorities confirmed that the Easter service formed part of nationwide special train operations rolled out to address seasonal travel demand across major corridors. The NRC noted that additional services and state-backed partnerships were introduced to ensure safe, reliable, and accessible transportation during the holiday period.

Transport analysts view such interventions as increasingly significant in Nigeria’s evolving rail revival strategy, where subnational governments collaborate with federal transport agencies to expand passenger access while promoting domestic tourism and regional economic activity.

Passenger Experience and Public Response

Many passengers reportedly commended the initiative, noting that the free service enabled families to reunite without the financial strain typically associated with peak-season travel. Testimonials highlighted improved organisation and punctual departures, reinforcing confidence in rail transport as a viable alternative to road travel.

Officials from the state’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry emphasized that the programme is intended not only as a welfare gesture but also as a means of strengthening cultural and economic ties by encouraging indigenes living outside the state to return home during festive periods.

Rail Transport and Regional Connectivity

The Lagos–Osogbo corridor has become a strategic route during celebrations such as Easter, Eid, and Christmas, reflecting renewed interest in rail mobility as Nigeria seeks safer and more affordable transportation options. Experts argue that sustained investment in rail partnerships between states and federal agencies could help decongest highways while improving regional integration across the Southwest.

As Nigeria continues to expand its rail infrastructure, initiatives like Osun’s free holiday train service demonstrate how targeted public transport policies can directly impact citizens’ welfare while supporting broader economic and social connectivity goals.
