“Gas Production Resumes at Iraq’s Khor Mor Facility After Month Long Security Disruption”
Iraq’s key natural gas operations at the Khor Mor facility have resumed following a month long suspension triggered by escalating regional security tensions, marking a significant step toward stabilizing energy supply in the country’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
The Emirati energy firm Dana Gas confirmed the restart of production at the strategically important Khor Mor gas field, which is a major supplier of fuel for electricity generation in Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). Operations had been halted after heightened security risks linked to regional conflict disrupted activities and raised concerns over the safety of critical energy infrastructure.
The suspension had intensified pressure on electricity production across the region, where gas from Khor Mor plays a central role in powering local generation plants. Authorities and energy stakeholders had warned that prolonged disruption could deepen power shortages and affect industrial and domestic energy supply.
With production now restored, Dana Gas is expected to gradually ramp up output as security conditions stabilize. Energy officials in the Kurdistan region have welcomed the resumption, describing it as a crucial development for maintaining electricity supply stability and supporting economic activity.
The Khor Mor gas field, jointly operated by Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum, is one of the largest non-associated gas developments in Iraq and a cornerstone of the region’s energy infrastructure. It has repeatedly faced operational disruptions in recent years due to security incidents and infrastructural challenges, underscoring ongoing vulnerabilities in Iraq’s energy sector.
Industry analysts note that while the resumption is a positive signal, the incident highlights the continued exposure of Iraq’s energy assets to geopolitical instability and the urgent need for strengthened protection of critical infrastructure.
The development comes amid broader efforts by Iraq and regional authorities to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on imported fuel, particularly as demand for electricity continues to rise across the country.
