“IGP Deploys DIGs Across Nigeria, Orders Nationwide Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles”

The Inspector general of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) to Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones as part of a renewed strategy to strengthen security coordination, enhance operational efficiency, and combat rising criminal activities across the country.

According to police authorities, the deployment is aimed at reinforcing supervision of security operations, improving intelligence gathering, and ensuring a more coordinated response to emerging security threats in different regions of the country. The move comes amid ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to address challenges such as kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and other forms of organized crime.

In a related directive, the IGP has also ordered an immediate nationwide enforcement operation targeting unregistered vehicles. Police officials said the crackdown is designed to curb criminal activities often facilitated through vehicles without proper registration, forged documentation, or concealed identities. Security experts have long identified unregistered vehicles as a significant challenge in criminal investigations, as they can hinder efforts to trace suspects and recover stolen assets.

The Nigeria Police Force stated that vehicle owners are expected to comply fully with registration requirements and ensure all documentation remains valid and up to date. Authorities emphasized that the exercise is not only a law enforcement measure but also part of broader efforts to improve public safety, strengthen accountability on Nigerian roads, and enhance the effectiveness of crime-prevention strategies.

Analysts note that the deployment of senior police leadership to the geopolitical zones could improve operational oversight and facilitate faster decision-making in responding to security incidents. The latest directive also aligns with ongoing government efforts to modernize security infrastructure and improve inter-agency collaboration in tackling crime nationwide.

Citizens have been urged to cooperate with law enforcement officers during the enforcement exercise and to report suspicious activities that may threaten public safety. The police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring that all operations are conducted within the framework of the law and respect for citizens’ rights.
