Peter Obi Seeks N5 Billion Damages, Public Apology from Kenneth Okonkwo Over Alleged Defamatory Remarks.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has demanded N5 billion in damages and a public retraction from actor turned politician Kenneth Okonkwo over comments allegedly made during a televised interview that his legal team describes as defamatory and damaging to his reputation.

According to a letter issued by Obi’s lawyers, the former Anambra State governor is seeking a formal apology to be published across major national newspapers and media platforms. The legal team contends that statements attributed to Okonkwo during the interview contained false allegations capable of lowering Obi’s standing in the eyes of the public and undermining his political credibility.

The development marks a significant escalation in the growing political disagreement between the two prominent figures, who were once associated through the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential campaign. In recent months, public exchanges and differing interpretations of political events have exposed tensions between Obi and Okonkwo, drawing widespread attention from supporters and political observers across Nigeria.

Obi’s legal representatives reportedly warned that failure to meet the demands within the stipulated period could result in legal action. While the specific details of the disputed remarks have continued to generate debate in political circles, the case underscores the increasing use of legal channels to address alleged reputational harm arising from public commentary and media appearances.

As of the time of filing this report, Kenneth Okonkwo had not publicly indicated whether he would comply with the demands or contest the allegations in court. Analysts note that the dispute could further shape public discourse surrounding key opposition figures ahead of future political engagements in Nigeria.

The controversy has attracted considerable public interest, with legal experts highlighting the broader implications for freedom of expression, political accountability, and the boundaries of public criticism in a democratic society. Observers will be watching closely to see whether the matter is resolved through dialogue or proceeds to litigation.
