Tinubu to Nigerian Youths: Stay, Innovate and Help Build a Stronger Nation Amid ‘Japa’ Trend.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to Nigerian youths to resist the growing temptation to emigrate permanently and instead contribute their talents, innovation, and energy toward building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.
Speaking during an engagement with young Nigerians, the President acknowledged the economic and social challenges driving the popular “japa” phenomenon a term commonly used to describe the migration of Nigerians seeking better opportunities abroad. However, he stressed that the country’s future depends significantly on the commitment and participation of its youth population.
Tinubu noted that his administration is implementing reforms aimed at expanding economic opportunities, attracting investment, creating jobs, and improving the overall business environment. According to him, these initiatives are designed to empower young Nigerians, support entrepreneurship, and provide pathways for sustainable growth within the country.
The President emphasized that nation building requires collective effort, urging young people to see themselves as key stakeholders in Nigeria’s development journey. He said the government remains focused on policies intended to strengthen critical sectors, including technology, education, infrastructure, agriculture, and small business development.
The appeal comes against the backdrop of continued concerns over the increasing number of skilled professionals and graduates leaving Nigeria in search of better economic prospects overseas. Analysts have noted that the migration trend has contributed to talent shortages in sectors such as healthcare, education, technology, and engineering.
While acknowledging citizens’ right to seek opportunities globally, Tinubu encouraged Nigerian youths to also explore opportunities at home, participate actively in economic transformation efforts, and contribute to shaping a more competitive and resilient nation.
The administration maintains that ongoing economic reforms will deliver long-term benefits, although experts continue to debate the pace at which these measures can address immediate concerns related to inflation, unemployment, and the cost of living.
As discussions around migration and youth development continue, the President’s message underscores a broader national conversation about retaining talent, fostering innovation, and creating an environment where young Nigerians can thrive and achieve their aspirations without feeling compelled to leave the country.
