Edo Queens FC continued their impressive campaign in the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership Super Six with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over host side Rivers Angels in a thrilling South-South derby at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
The Matchday 4 win propelled the Benin-based club to the top of the Super Six standings with nine points, strengthening their title aspirations after bouncing back from an opening defeat to Nasarawa Amazons. Edo Queens had earlier recorded convincing victories over FC Robo Queens (4-1) and Abia Angels (6-2).
Reacting to the team’s performance, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, commended the players for their resilience, determination, and winning mentality.
In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Edoko Wilson Edoko, Enabulele praised the team’s response to their early setback, noting that they had approached subsequent matches with renewed confidence and purpose.
“The girls moved past the defeat to Nasarawa Amazons and have approached every game with determination and commitment to win,” he said.
“For the team, every minute and every opportunity mattered, and that is why they have been victorious.”
Edo Queens broke the deadlock in the 39th minute when substitute Precious Oscar capitalised on a scoring opportunity to put her side ahead before halftime.
Rivers Angels responded in the second half, with substitute Abasiofon Uwah equalising in the 72nd minute to set up a tense finish.
However, Edo Queens regained the lead just five minutes later when Chioma Moses found the back of the net in the 77th minute, securing a crucial victory for the reigning league champions.
Enabulele urged the players not to lose focus as they prepare for their final Super Six fixture against defending champions Bayelsa Queens.
“Let’s not relent. It is not over yet. I urge the team to put in their best efforts in the final match against Bayelsa Queens FC,” he said.
With the victory, Edo Queens remain firmly in contention for the NWFL Premiership Super Six title as they continue their quest for glory in Port Harcourt.
