BENIN CITY – Stakeholders have urged men to embrace regular exercise, adequate water intake, sufficient sleep, and routine medical check-ups to maintain good health and improve productivity in the workplace.

The call was made on Friday during an Executive Men’s Wellness Session themed, “Men’s Health Matters: Taking Responsibility for a Healthier Future,” organised by the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDOHIC) to mark Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month.

Speaking at the event, a resource person, Dr. Rasheed Abassi, warned men against prolonged sitting and excessive salt consumption, noting that both habits could increase the risk of health complications, including high blood pressure and prostate-related ailments.

According to him, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for overall well-being.

“Health is wealth. Every Edo man should take advantage of the opportunities provided by the government to safeguard his health,” Abassi said.

He recommended regular walking, noting that a 15-minute walk in the morning and another in the evening could help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of hypertension, diabetes, and other health conditions.

“Prolonged sitting is the new smoking. It comes with many health risks. We must also reduce our salt intake because excessive salt consumption contributes to high blood pressure and other related health challenges,” he added.

Abassi further encouraged residents to enroll in the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme, stressing that registration is currently free and provides access to primary healthcare services.

In his goodwill message, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole emphasized the importance of adequate hydration, describing water as a vital component of healthy living.

“Drink more water, relax, exercise, eat better, and fast wisely. Scientific studies have shown that adequate hydration can help prevent kidney stones and reduce several health challenges,” he said.

Oshiomhole also urged men to prioritize their mental health by socializing and openly discussing issues affecting them.

“Pay attention to your mental health. Water is life, and many health challenges can be reduced through proper hydration,” he added.

In her remarks, the Director-General of EDOHIC, Dr. Augusta Ikpea-Enaholo, advocated routine health screenings, including blood pressure and diabetes tests, as essential measures for maintaining good health among men.

She noted that regular prostate examinations, healthy eating habits, physical activity, adequate rest, and effective stress management could significantly reduce the risk of serious illnesses and improve overall quality of life.

One of the participants, Mr. Benjamin Oje, commended the organisers for the initiative, describing the session as enlightening and informative.

He said the programme exposed participants to valuable health information and practical steps they could take to improve their well-being.

The wellness session formed part of activities aimed at raising awareness about men’s physical and mental health and encouraging preventive healthcare practices across Edo State.
