BARCELONA, Spain — FC Barcelona have completed the permanent signing of Portuguese defender João Cancelo, bringing the experienced full-back back to the Catalan club for a third spell after agreeing a contract that runs until June 2029.
Cancelo joins Barcelona as a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. The agreement allows the 32-year-old defender to return to the Spanish champions without a transfer fee, providing head coach Hansi Flick with an experienced and versatile option in defence.
The development was confirmed on Thursday, August 20, 2026, with international news agency Reuters reporting that Barcelona had re-signed Cancelo on a free transfer through 2029. Reuters noted that the Portuguese had previously represented Barcelona on loan during the 2023–24 season before returning for another loan spell in the second half of the 2025–26 campaign.
Cancelo’s return represents a continuation of a relationship that has developed over two temporary spells. During his previous periods at the club, he demonstrated his ability to operate on either flank, contributing both defensively and in attack.
Barcelona’s decision to bring him back permanently is also closely linked to Flick’s assessment of the player. The German coach values Cancelo’s attacking ability, experience and tactical flexibility, qualities that could prove important as the club competes across LaLiga and European competition.
According to Reuters, Cancelo made 65 appearances, scored six goals and provided nine assists across his previous spells with Barcelona. His ability to contribute from full-back positions gives Flick another experienced option as the club seeks to maintain its domestic dominance.
The move follows a period of negotiations between Barcelona and Al-Hilal. Earlier reports had suggested that Barcelona could have to pay a transfer fee to secure Cancelo, but the Portuguese defender ultimately became available after his contract with the Saudi club was terminated by mutual agreement.
Spanish news agency EFE reported that Cancelo underwent his medical examination with Barcelona before completing the move and is set to sign a three-year contract. EFE also confirmed that the defender’s latest return marks his third stint with the Catalan giants.
Cancelo has reportedly made personal efforts to facilitate the move, including accepting a reduction in his salary to secure his departure from Al-Hilal. Spanish outlet AS previously reported that the defender was determined to return to Barcelona after his second loan spell.
His career includes spells with several of Europe’s leading clubs, including Benfica, Valencia, Inter Milan, Juventus, Manchester City and Bayern Munich. He has also represented Portugal at international level, making him one of the more experienced defenders in Barcelona’s current squad.
For Barcelona, the deal represents a potentially valuable piece of squad planning. Securing an established international defender without paying a transfer fee could provide the club with greater financial flexibility while adding depth and experience to Flick’s defensive options.
Cancelo’s versatility is particularly significant. Although naturally a full-back, he has demonstrated the ability to play on both sides of the defence and contribute higher up the pitch. That tactical flexibility gives Flick additional options depending on the opponent and match situation.
The Portuguese defender’s return also comes as Barcelona continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new LaLiga campaign. EFE reported that Cancelo and fellow new arrival Rodri both completed their medical examinations at the club’s training facilities earlier this week.
For Cancelo, however, the transfer represents more than a conventional move between clubs. His previous comments about Barcelona have underlined his desire to remain at the club, and his return now gives him an opportunity to establish himself permanently at Camp Nou rather than through another loan arrangement.
Barcelona will hope that the defender’s experience, attacking qualities and familiarity with the club can translate into consistent performances as the team seeks further domestic success and a stronger challenge in Europe.
With a contract running until 2029, Cancelo now has the opportunity to make his third Barcelona spell his most significant — this time as a permanent member of the squad.
