ICAO Integration to Enhance International Recognition of Nigerian Passports

Nigeria has recorded another significant milestone in its efforts to strengthen the integrity and global acceptance of its international passport, following the successful integration of all the country’s Country Signing Certificate Authorities (CSCAs) into the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Public Key Directory (PKD).

The landmark achievement, facilitated by the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), is expected to eliminate passport verification challenges previously encountered by some Nigerian travellers at international border control points.

The official completion ceremony took place at the ICAO Headquarters in Montreal, Canada, where the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, led the Nigerian delegation in marking the country’s full integration into the global passport authentication system.

According to the Nigeria Immigration Service, the successful upload of all Nigeria’s existing CSCAs into the ICAO Public Key Directory addresses the passive authentication issues that had affected holders of Nigerian electronic passports in some foreign countries.

With this development, immigration and border control authorities in ICAO PKD member states can now instantly verify the authenticity and integrity of Nigerian electronic passports through internationally recognised digital certification. This creates a trusted digital verification framework that enhances confidence in Nigerian travel documents and supports faster, more efficient border clearance procedures.

The Nigeria Immigration Service described the achievement as a major step towards improving the credibility of Nigeria’s travel documents while promoting international interoperability and seamless cross-border travel for Nigerian passport holders.

The ICAO Public Key Directory serves as the world’s central repository for digital certificates used to authenticate electronic passports issued by participating countries. By completing its integration, Nigeria joins other nations in strengthening international aviation security standards while providing greater convenience and confidence for its citizens travelling abroad.

The development is expected to significantly reduce delays associated with passport verification, improve border security cooperation among participating countries, and reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to adopting international best practices in identity management and travel document security.

Obaland Magazine’s Perspective

The successful integration into the ICAO Public Key Directory represents more than a technological advancement; it reflects Nigeria’s ongoing commitment to modernising its immigration system and improving the international standing of its passport. As global travel increasingly relies on secure digital authentication, this achievement places Nigeria in a stronger position within the international aviation and border management community.

Obaland Magazine commends the Federal Government, the Ministry of Interior, and the leadership of the Nigeria Immigration Service under Comptroller-General Kemi Nanna Nandap for this important accomplishment. Continued investments in secure identity management and digital infrastructure will further enhance the confidence of the international community in Nigerian travel documents and create smoother travel experiences for Nigerian citizens across the world
