  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Putin’s First Kuril Islands Visit Triggers Fresh Diplomatic Clash With Japan.

Moscow/Tokyo August 13, 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first visit to the disputed Kuril Islands has triggered a fresh diplomatic confrontation with Japan, with Tokyo strongly protesting the trip and warning that it could further damage already strained relations between the two countries.

Putin visited Iturup, known as Etorofu in Japan, one of the four southernmost islands claimed by Tokyo and administered by Moscow. During the visit, the Russian president toured a fish processing facility, a hospital and a school, and met with Sakhalin Region Governor Valery Limarenko. Reuters reported that Putin also sampled local fish roe and praised conditions on the island.

Japan considers the four southern Kuril Islands which it calls the Northern Territories  to be its sovereign territory. Tokyo maintains that the islands were unlawfully seized by the Soviet Union during the final stages of World War II. The long running territorial dispute has been a major obstacle to relations and has prevented Russia and Japan from formally concluding a post World War II peace treaty.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described Putin’s visit as “absolutely unacceptable,” according to Reuters, arguing that the trip worsened Japanese public sentiment toward Russia. The diplomatic dispute comes at a particularly sensitive time, as Japan prepares for its annual August 15 commemoration marking the end of World War II.

The disagreement also reflects the broader deterioration in Russia Japan relations following Moscow’s full scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Japan joined Western sanctions against Russia, while Moscow has accused Tokyo of adopting an unfriendly position. Earlier this year, the Kremlin said relations between the two countries had effectively been reduced to a very low level, while Japan continued to maintain that resolving the territorial dispute and securing a peace treaty remained a government objective.

The Kuril Islands dispute has remained unresolved for decades despite repeated diplomatic efforts. Russia has strengthened its military presence and economic activities in the region, while Japan continues to press its claim to the four southern islands. Putin’s latest visit therefore carries significance beyond a presidential tour, reinforcing Moscow’s assertion of control while underscoring the continuing diplomatic divide between Russia and Japan.
