  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Tinubu Launches 2027 Re Election Campaign in Kaduna as APC Targets Northern Votes.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are set to formally launch the party’s 2027 presidential re election campaign in Kaduna State on Saturday, October 24, 2026, as the ruling party intensifies efforts to consolidate support across northern Nigeria.

The campaign flag-off marks a significant step in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with party leaders seeking to mobilize voters and strengthen the party’s grassroots structures ahead of the polls.

According to News reports, the APC Presidential Campaign Council’s Director-General, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, announced the Kaduna event after meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja earlier in October.

Kaduna was selected as the starting point for the campaign, with subsequent engagements expected in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Maiduguri, Borno State. The campaign council is expected to announce further details of its nationwide schedule.

Security Tightened Ahead of Rally

Preparations intensified across Kaduna ahead of the presidential visit, with security arrangements strengthened around key locations and the rally venue.

On Friday, October 23, APC support groups staged a solidarity march through parts of Kaduna to demonstrate their support for Tinubu’s re election bid. The procession was led by representatives of the party’s support groups mobilisation structure.

The state government also expressed readiness to host the event, while party supporters travelled from different parts of the country in anticipation of the rally.

APC Targets Northern Electoral Support

The campaign comes as political parties position themselves for a highly competitive presidential election. Northern Nigeria remains strategically important because of its substantial share of Nigeria’s registered voters.

Figures cited by News reports indicate that the North accounts for approximately 56 million of Nigeria’s 103.43 million registered voters, making the region a major factor in determining the outcome of the presidential election.

APC leaders have expressed confidence in Tinubu’s chances of securing another term, pointing to the party’s political structures and mobilisation efforts across the country.

However, opposition figures have challenged the ruling party’s optimism, citing economic hardship, rising living costs and insecurity as issues likely to influence voters’ decisions.

The campaign will therefore test the APC’s ability to convert its political organisation and support networks into electoral backing, particularly in areas where the party faces significant opposition.

Economic Conditions and Security Remain Key Issues

As political activities gather momentum, Nigerians are expected to assess the performance of the Tinubu administration, including its economic reforms and responses to security challenges.

The rising cost of living, inflationary pressures and concerns over public safety remain important issues for households and communities across the country.

While the APC is expected to use its campaign to present its achievements and seek public support for another term, opposition parties are likely to focus on the difficulties confronting citizens under the current administration.

The 2027 presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, according to the timetable reported by The PUNCH. The Kaduna campaign launch represents an early opportunity for the ruling party to present its message and demonstrate its mobilisation capacity ahead of the contest.
