Eno Reaffirms Ibom Air Expansion Plan, Backs Uyo MRO Facility as Aviation Growth Strategy.

UYO, AKWA IBOM  Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the continued expansion of the state owned Ibom Air and the development of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo.

The renewed commitment forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to strengthen Akwa Ibom’s aviation ecosystem, improve air connectivity and position Uyo as an emerging aviation hub in Nigeria and the wider West African region. Ibom Air, which commenced operations in June 2019, was established as a key component of the state’s economic transformation programme alongside the airport and MRO facility.

The state’s fleet expansion strategy has already included the acquisition of Airbus A220-300 aircraft. Ibom Air confirmed in August 2024 that its second A220-300 had joined the fleet, describing the acquisition as part of efforts to increase capacity, raise flight frequencies and expand the airline’s route network. Governor Eno said at the time that the expansion was aligned with Akwa Ibom’s broader aviation and economic development objectives.

The MRO project remains another major component of the state’s aviation ambitions. The facility is intended to provide aircraft maintenance capabilities in Uyo, potentially reducing the dependence of Nigerian airlines on overseas maintenance services while creating opportunities for technical skills development and aviation related employment. Aviation Week previously reported that Ibom Air was seeking to build significant in-house maintenance capability and position the Uyo facility to serve a wider African market.

Governor Eno’s position also builds on previous commitments to complete and operationalize the MRO. In 2024, The Guardian reported that the governor had pledged to accelerate the completion of the MRO hanger and the new international terminal at Victor Attah International Airport. More recently, the Akwa Ibom State Government said several airport projects, including the MRO facility, taxiway, apron, terminal and other supporting infrastructure, remained part of its ongoing aviation development programme.

The significance of the investment extends beyond Ibom Air itself. A functional MRO facility could strengthen Nigeria’s domestic aviation maintenance capacity, retain more aviation related spending within the country and support the development of specialized engineering expertise. The state has already invested in human capital development, with Punch and The Guardian reporting in 2025 that 15 Akwa Ibom indigenes had completed pilot training in France while 20 others qualified as aircraft maintenance engineers in Ethiopia under a state backed programme.

For Akwa Ibom, the continued development of Ibom Air, the MRO facility and associated airport infrastructure represents an attempt to create an integrated aviation ecosystem capable of supporting tourism, trade, investment and regional connectivity. The challenge now will be translating the state’s substantial investment into sustainable operations, measurable economic returns and long term aviation competitiveness.
