  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Among di goods wey dey affected na Canadian alcohol drinks, motorbike and some dairy products. Di American government also put fresh 50 per cent tax on some Canadian cheese, steel, aluminium and furniture products.

Di new action come less than one day after Canada put heavy tax on about $20 billion worth of goods wey dem dey bring from America. Canada take dat step after America earlier put similar trade punishment on Canadian goods.

Trump government say Canada dey treat American businesses unfairly, especially for alcohol, dairy and motor-vehicle trade. According to America government, most Canadian provinces and territories stop buying, selling or distributing American alcohol since 2025, while dem no apply the same kind restriction to goods from some other countries.

America government claim say between March 2025 and February 2026, Canadian import of American alcoholic drinks fall by about 81 per cent, from around $718 million to about $137 million.

But Canadian authorities don reject America position and accuse Trump government of making unreasonable demands and using trade punishment to put pressure on Canada.

The new ban and fresh taxes dey show how the long-running trade fight between the two neighbouring countries don continue to grow. Reuters report say the latest American measures include ban on goods such as whisky, beer, whey protein, molasses and some motorbikes, while some other Canadian goods go face 50 per cent tax.

The matter fit affect businesses and consumers for both countries because America and Canada get one of the biggest trading relationships for the world. As the disagreement continue, businesses for both sides fit face higher costs, supply problems and reduced access to each other markets.

Even with the tension, officials from both sides still dey look for way to settle the disagreement through negotiation. But if both countries continue to increase restrictions against each other, the trade fight fit create bigger economic pressure for businesses, workers and consumers.

For Obaland magazine, the development show how trade policy between powerful countries fit affect ordinary people far beyond government offices. Alcohol producers, farmers, manufacturers, transport businesses and consumers for both America and Canada now dey face fresh uncertainty as the two countries struggle over market access and trade rules.
