Nigeria Loses Veteran Journalist, Media Scholar and Former Lagos Commissioner at 85.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, a veteran Nigerian journalist, renowned communication scholar and former Commissioner for Education in Lagos State, who died on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the age of 85.

Sanwo Olu described Sobowale’s passing as a significant loss to Lagos State and Nigeria, highlighting his contributions to journalism, communication education and public service.

According to a report by  Newspapers published on Friday, October 9, the governor conveyed his condolences in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile. He described the late professor as one of Nigeria’s pioneering mass communication scholars whose professional contributions had left a lasting mark on the country.

The governor also acknowledged Sobowale’s experience as a war correspondent and his influence on the development of journalism and education in Nigeria.

A Distinguished Career in Journalism and Academia

Professor Sobowale was widely recognized for his contributions to journalism practice, communication research and media education over several decades.

He began his journalism career at Daily Times of Nigeria, where he worked as a war correspondent and later served as an assistant editor between 1964 and 1975.

He subsequently pursued academic training in mass communication at the University of Lagos before proceeding to Syracuse University in the United States, where he earned a PhD in Scientific Journalism in 1978.

His academic career included teaching and research at the University of Lagos and Lagos State University (LASU). At LASU, he served as a professor of journalism and pioneer dean of the School of Communication from 2004 to 2007.

His work helped strengthen the relationship between journalism practice, empirical research and communication education in Nigeria.

Pioneering Opinion Polling in Nigerian Journalism

One of Sobowale’s notable contributions was his pioneering work in public opinion polling and precision journalism.

Following his doctoral studies, he established a public opinion polling desk at The Punch, helping introduce a more systematic approach to measuring public attitudes and interpreting political developments through research.

His work was particularly significant during a period when Nigeria’s media industry was expanding its role in public affairs and democratic engagement.

Public opinion research remains an important tool in journalism, enabling media organisations to examine citizens’ views on elections, governance and other matters of national importance. Sobowale’s contributions helped advance the place of evidence-based reporting within Nigeria’s media landscape.

His legacy therefore extends beyond the institutions where he worked to the wider professional community that continues to rely on research, accuracy and accountability in journalism.

From Journalism to Public Service in Lagos State

Beyond his achievements in the newsroom and lecture hall, Sobowale also served in the Lagos State Government.

He was appointed Special Adviser on Education during the administration of former Governor Lateef Jakande before serving as Commissioner for Education under former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu between 1999 and 2003.

His transition from journalism and academia into public administration reflected a career that connected communication, education and governance.

As education commissioner, he occupied a position of responsibility in one of Nigeria’s most populous and economically significant states.

His contributions to national development were recognized in 2006 when he received the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), one of Nigeria’s national honours.

Tributes From Nigeria’s Media and Academic Communities

Sobowale’s death has prompted tributes from members of Nigeria’s journalism, academic and communication communities.

According to News reports the announcement of his death was made by a family member, Akinniyi I. Sowunmi, in a statement titled Transition to Glory.

The statement described his passing as a significant loss to the communication community, particularly members of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN).

Sobowale served as chairman of the association’s Board of Trustees, maintaining a longstanding connection with professionals and academics working to advance communication studies in Nigeria.

His career encompassed newsroom reporting, university teaching, research, academic leadership and government service, giving him a distinctive place in the country’s media and education sectors.

For generations of journalists and communication students, his professional journey represents the importance of combining practical experience with research, teaching and a commitment to professional development.

Funeral Arrangements Yet to Be Announced

The family has indicated that details of Sobowale’s funeral arrangements will be announced later.

As tributes continue, his death marks the passing of a veteran whose career spanned several decades of change in Nigerian journalism, higher education and public administration.

His contributions to opinion polling, communication scholarship and journalism education remain important parts of his professional legacy.

Sanwo Olu’s condolence message adds to the expressions of grief from public officials, media professionals and academics mourning a figure whose influence extended across multiple areas of Nigerian public life.

For Nigeria’s journalism community, Sobowale’s legacy underscores the enduring importance of evidence based reporting, rigorous research, professional mentorship and quality communication education.
