Nigeria’s telecommunications regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has introduced a device verification framework designed to help identify mobile phones that meet the country’s telecommunications requirements and prevent non-compliant devices from accessing local networks.
The initiative is intended to strengthen consumer protection, improve compliance within the telecommunications sector and address concerns surrounding counterfeit and improperly approved mobile devices.
Under the framework, consumers can verify their phones through the NCC’s official Device Checker service. The Commission has also provided a USSD option, allowing users to access the verification service without relying exclusively on internet connectivity.
To check a device, users can dial *315# or visit the NCC’s official website and navigate to the Device Checker service. Consumers should follow the instructions provided through the official platform to determine whether their devices meet the applicable requirements.
The verification process is particularly relevant for people purchasing new phones, importing devices from abroad or buying second-hand handsets. Confirming a device’s compliance status before completing a transaction can help consumers avoid purchasing phones that may be restricted from accessing Nigerian mobile networks.
The framework also reflects a broader regulatory effort to improve accountability in Nigeria’s telecommunications market, where counterfeit products and devices that do not meet required standards can expose consumers to financial losses and connectivity problems.
