  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has unveiled a futuristic version of the Tesla Roadster featuring rocket-inspired technology developed in collaboration with SpaceX, drawing renewed attention to the long-promised concept of flying cars.

The next-generation electric sports car was presented at a SpaceX test facility in Texas, United States. During the demonstration, the vehicle performed aerial manoeuvres, including a mid-air rotation, before landing on its wheels. The display marked an ambitious attempt to combine high-performance electric motoring with aerospace engineering.

According to reports by Reuters, the redesigned Roadster uses high-pressure air tanks and thrusters to lift the vehicle and control its movements. Tesla engineers also demonstrated a suction system designed to generate substantial downforce, allowing the car to travel upside down along a specially constructed ramp.

Musk said the vehicle was developed through close collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX engineers. He described the project as a bold demonstration of what the two companies could achieve by combining their respective automotive and aerospace technologies.

The company says the Roadster is expected to enter production in 2028, although its commercial availability and regulatory requirements remain important considerations. Musk acknowledged that the vehicle’s unusual capabilities may not comply with road regulations in every jurisdiction.

The announcement comes after years of delays surrounding the next-generation Roadster, which Tesla first introduced in 2017. Its original production timeline was repeatedly postponed, leaving prospective buyers waiting for a vehicle initially presented as a major milestone in electric-car performance.

Tesla’s latest demonstration also raises questions about the practical application of flying-car technology. While the vehicle’s airborne manoeuvres attracted considerable attention, a controlled demonstration at a test facility does not establish that the car can operate safely as a conventional road vehicle or fly freely in public airspace.

For the wider automotive industry, the unveiling highlights the continuing convergence of electric mobility, advanced propulsion systems and aerospace engineering. However, manufacturing costs, safety certification, infrastructure and transport regulations will determine whether such technology can move beyond spectacular demonstrations.

For African markets, including Nigeria, the development offers a glimpse into emerging transport technologies while underscoring the importance of reliable electricity, charging infrastructure, affordability and appropriate regulatory frameworks in the adoption of advanced electric vehicles.

Tesla’s flying Roadster is therefore both a technological statement and an ambitious commercial proposition. Whether it becomes a practical product or remains a specialised performance vehicle will depend on engineering validation, regulatory approval and the company’s ability to deliver on its latest production target.

Elon Musk unveils Tesla’s next-generation Roadster with SpaceX-inspired thrusters, demonstrating aerial manoeuvres as production targets 2028 amid safety and regulatory questions.
