Adamawa Police Arrest 31 Year Old Over Alleged Cyber bullying of First Class Chief.

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 31 year old man over alleged cyber bullying directed at a First Class traditional ruler in the state, as authorities intensify warnings against the misuse of social media to harass, defame or incite members of the public.

The arrest underscores growing concerns over the use of digital platforms to target traditional institutions and public figures. Police authorities have continued to urge residents to exercise restraint and responsibility in their online activities, particularly when making allegations that could damage another person’s reputation or threaten public peace.

The development comes against the backdrop of previous cybercrime related cases in Adamawa involving social media publications. In May 2024, the state police command arrested a 33 year old man, Aliyu Musa, popularly known as Imam Mahdi, over alleged abusive TikTok content targeting prominent stakeholders in the state. Police said at the time that the publications lacked substantiated evidence and warned social media users against posts capable of damaging reputations or disrupting public order.

Adamawa has also witnessed a separate high-profile cyber bullying and defamation dispute involving Umar Bello Jada, popularly known as “Calculate.” In June 2025, an Adamawa State High Court remanded Jada over allegations connected to Facebook posts concerning Walin Ganye, Alhaji Mohammed Sadiq Kalu. Reports said the case involved allegations of cyber bullying and defamation, while the defence argued that the matter had political dimensions.

The broader legal context is significant. Nigeria’s amended Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act provides legal sanctions for certain forms of harmful online conduct, while criminal defamation remains subject to provisions of existing Nigerian law. Premium Times, reporting on another cyber bullying case, noted that the 2024 amendment to the Cybercrime Act strengthened the legal framework governing harmful online behaviour.

For journalists, citizens and social media users, the cases highlight the importance of distinguishing legitimate criticism from conduct that may cross legal boundaries. Public figures and traditional rulers are not beyond scrutiny, but allegations should be supported by evidence, while online commentary should avoid threats, harassment, deliberate falsehoods and abusive language.

The latest arrest also reinforces the Adamawa Police Command’s continuing emphasis on responsible social media use and maintaining public order. However, an arrest remains an allegation and does not constitute a finding of guilt. The suspect is entitled to due process, including the opportunity to respond to the allegations and have the matter determined by a competent court.

As social media increasingly shapes public discourse across Nigeria, authorities and citizens face the shared challenge of protecting freedom of expression while addressing online conduct that may cause demonstrable harm. Responsible digital citizenship, evidence based reporting and respect for due process remain essential to navigating that balance.
