Reported by Musa Antiketu,| Journalist at Obaland magazine.

ADAMAWA, Nigeria — The Adamawa State Police Command is reportedly investigating a disturbing case involving the alleged killing of a man by his 30-year-old son, identified as Peter Sinamai, with the deceased’s body allegedly dumped inside a well.

The reported arrest has raised concerns within the community and renewed attention on the need for thorough investigations into violent crimes occurring within family settings.

According to information made available to Obaland magazine, police authorities arrested Sinamai following allegations that he was responsible for the death of his father. The body of the deceased was reportedly disposed of in a well after the alleged killing.

However, details surrounding the incident, including the precise location, circumstances leading to the alleged confrontation, the identity and age of the deceased, and the exact cause of death, were not independently established by Obaland magazine at the time of publication.

The police investigation is therefore expected to establish what happened, determine the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and establish whether the suspect has any criminal responsibility.

Police investigation expected to establish circumstances

In cases involving alleged homicide, an arrest does not in itself establish guilt. A suspect remains entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.

Investigators would ordinarily be expected to establish a timeline of events, examine the location where the alleged crime occurred, document physical evidence and obtain statements from people who may have relevant information.

Where a body is recovered from a well, forensic and medical examination can also become important in determining the cause and circumstances of death.

An autopsy or post-mortem examination may help investigators establish whether the deceased died from injuries sustained before being placed in the well, whether the body showed signs of drowning or whether other circumstances contributed to the death.

Such evidence can become particularly important where the circumstances surrounding a death are disputed.

Allegation remains subject to investigation

The allegation against Sinamai remains a matter for investigators and, if the case proceeds to court, the judicial process.

Obaland magazine has therefore refrained from describing the suspect as a murderer or from presenting the allegation as an established fact.

This distinction is important in crime reporting, particularly in cases where an investigation is still underway. Police arrests are generally made on the basis of reasonable suspicion or information requiring further investigation; they do not constitute a conviction.

The eventual determination of guilt or innocence rests with the courts.

The police will also be expected to establish whether other individuals were involved in the alleged disposal of the body or whether the suspect acted alone.

Family-related violence and the challenge of early intervention

The reported incident also highlights the broader challenge of violent disputes within families.

Family conflicts can sometimes remain hidden from authorities until they escalate into serious violence. Disagreements involving inheritance, property, money, domestic relationships and longstanding disputes can become particularly difficult when they are not resolved through appropriate channels.

Nevertheless, the circumstances of the Adamawa case should not be presumed until investigators establish the facts.

Authorities may need to determine whether there was a previous dispute between the suspect and his father, whether there had been earlier complaints or threats, and whether neighbours or relatives were aware of tensions within the family.

These questions could help investigators establish a possible motive, although motive alone would not prove criminal responsibility.

Importance of forensic evidence

The reported discovery of a body in a well makes the preservation and examination of evidence particularly important.

Investigators may need to secure the scene, recover the body under controlled conditions, document its position and condition, and preserve any material that could assist the investigation.

Forensic evidence may include injuries on the deceased, traces at the suspected crime scene, fingerprints, biological evidence, clothing, weapons or other objects potentially connected to the incident.

Digital evidence could also become relevant where investigators have access to mobile phones, messages, call records or other communications that may help reconstruct events before and after the alleged killing.

The proper handling of such evidence is critical because criminal proceedings require evidence capable of withstanding scrutiny in court.

Adamawa has recorded other serious homicide investigations

The reported case comes against the backdrop of other homicide investigations in Adamawa State.

In July 2026, The Guardian reported that the Adamawa State Police Command arrested a man identified as Abubakar Musa over the alleged killing of 30-year-old Nathaniel Yusuf in Jambutu Ward, Yola North Local Government Area.

According to the report, Yusuf had allegedly been attacked and sustained serious injuries, including fractures to both legs and his right hand, as well as head injuries. He was taken to Specialist Hospital, Jimeta, where he was later pronounced dead. The police subsequently transferred the investigation to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola.

The Whistler separately reported the same case, stating that the suspect was arrested at the scene after the deceased’s sister reported the alleged assault to the police. The publication also reported that the police ordered further investigation and that the deceased’s body was deposited for autopsy.

That case is not the same incident as the allegation involving Peter Sinamai and his father, but it demonstrates the importance of carefully distinguishing separate criminal investigations rather than combining details from different reports.

Police responsibility and due process

In any homicide investigation, the responsibility of law enforcement extends beyond making an arrest.

Investigators must gather sufficient evidence to establish what happened, identify those responsible and present the evidence through the appropriate legal process.

The police also have a responsibility to protect the rights of suspects and victims’ families throughout the investigation.

If the allegation against Sinamai is substantiated and investigators determine that sufficient evidence exists, the suspect could face prosecution under the applicable criminal law.

If the investigation fails to establish the allegation, however, the legal process must equally provide for the suspect’s rights.

For the family of the deceased, the investigation is likely to be closely watched as they seek answers concerning the circumstances surrounding their relative’s death.

Community urged to support investigation

Residents with credible information concerning the reported incident should cooperate with law enforcement authorities rather than relying on speculation or unverified claims circulating through social media.

Crime investigations can be compromised when rumours, misinformation or unsupported allegations are presented as established facts.

Community members who witnessed relevant events or possess information capable of assisting investigators should make such information available through appropriate channels.

The police, for their part, are expected to provide verified updates as the investigation progresses.

Obaland magazine’s editorial position

Obaland magazine recognises the public interest in reporting serious crimes but maintains that responsible journalism requires a clear distinction between an allegation, an arrest, an investigation and a conviction.

At the time of this report, the allegation that Peter Sinamai killed his father and dumped his body in a well should therefore be treated as an allegation requiring investigation, rather than a proven fact.

Obaland magazine will continue to monitor developments and will update this report if credible information becomes available from the Adamawa State Police Command, court records or other authoritative sources.

The central questions now are whether the deceased’s cause of death can be conclusively established, what evidence investigators recover, whether other individuals were involved and whether prosecutors ultimately determine that there is sufficient evidence to bring the suspect before a court.

Until those questions are answered through credible evidence and due legal process, the presumption of innocence remains fundamental.

Adamawa police are reporteigating a 30-year-old man, Peter Sinamai, over the alleged killing of his fatherosal of the body in a well, with further details pending official confirmation.
