  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

ADC Challenges Tinubu Over Reported $12.4 Billion Gap in Nigeria’s External Accounts.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explain a reported $12.4 billion discrepancy in Nigeria’s external accounts highlighted in discussions surrounding the World Bank’s October 2026 Nigeria Development Update.

The opposition party, which estimates the amount at approximately ₦16.5 trillion, said Nigerians deserve greater transparency regarding the management of the country’s foreign earnings, particularly as households continue to grapple with rising living costs and economic pressures.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC argued that the reported discrepancy requires a comprehensive explanation from the Federal Government and relevant financial authorities.

World Bank Figures Raise Questions

According to reports on the World Bank’s October 2026 economic update, Nigeria recorded a current account surplus of approximately $12 billion and net financial inflows of $6.2 billion during the first half of 2026.

However, a reported $12.4 billion discrepancy in the country’s external accounts has prompted questions about the movement of foreign earnings and the extent to which export proceeds were returned to Nigeria.

Reports indicate that part of the discrepancy may be associated with oil export earnings that were not repatriated into the country. Existing arrangements involving crude oil pledged against long-term loans have also been cited as a factor affecting the return of export proceeds.

The issue has renewed debate about Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings, external reserves and the transparency of oil-related financial arrangements.

ADC Demands Full Disclosure

The opposition party maintained that the reported discrepancy is too significant to be dismissed without a detailed public explanation.

The ADC also compared the amount with Nigeria’s reported $2.2 billion in foreign direct investment during the period, arguing that the figures underscore the importance of greater accountability in the management of the country’s external finances.

The party called on the Tinubu administration to publish a comprehensive reconciliation of the reported gap, disclose details of oil backed loans and crude oil commitments, and provide updated information on Nigeria’s net foreign reserves.

It further urged the government to demonstrate how increased public revenues are translating into improvements in essential services, including healthcare, education and electricity.

The ADC linked its demand to the economic difficulties facing households, arguing that transparency in public finance is particularly important when citizens are being asked to endure the effects of economic reforms.

Understanding the Reported Discrepancy

While the ADC has described the figure as a major accountability concern, a discrepancy in external accounts does not, by itself, establish that money has been stolen or that an equivalent amount is missing from government coffers.

External accounts track transactions between a country and the rest of the world, including trade, investment and financial flows. Differences between reported inflows and other external account measures can arise from several factors, including the timing of transactions, incomplete reporting, financing arrangements and differences in statistical measurement.

A definitive explanation therefore requires a detailed examination of the underlying data and the relevant financial transactions.

The Federal Government’s response, alongside clarification from the appropriate financial authorities, will be important in determining the precise nature and composition of the reported discrepancy.

Accountability and Nigeria’s Economic Outlook

The controversy comes as Nigeria continues to navigate economic reforms, foreign exchange challenges and concerns about the cost of living.

The debate also highlights a broader question for Africa’s largest economy: how can improvements in macroeconomic indicators translate into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens?

For Nigerians, the central issue extends beyond the headline figure to the transparency of public finances, the management of oil revenues and the delivery of essential services.

Whether the reported $12.4 billion discrepancy can be fully reconciled will depend on detailed financial disclosures and an evidence based explanation from the relevant authorities.
