A presidential aspirant of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Dr Johnson Chukwuka, has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenging the emergence of Abbas-Bin Aliyu as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 Nigerian general election.
The case, filed as Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1853/2026, places both the ADP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the court. Chukwuka is asking the court to determine the validity of the party’s presidential primary reportedly held on May 29 and 30, 2026.
According to reports on the suit, Chukwuka disputes the declaration of Aliyu as the winner of the primary and subsequently challenges the submission of Aliyu’s name to INEC as the party’s presidential candidate.
His legal challenge also contests the publication of Aliyu’s name on INEC’s notice board on August 1. Chukwuka’s position, as presented in the court action, is that the nomination process did not comply with applicable electoral requirements and the party’s own procedures.
Chukwuka is seeking, among other reliefs, a declaration that the May 29–30 presidential primary was invalid, an order setting aside the outcome and the nomination based on it, and recognition of himself as the duly elected ADP presidential candidate.
The dispute comes after INEC published its final list of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2027 election. The commission’s published list included Abbas-Bin Aliyu as the ADP presidential candidate, with Ike Chinazam listed as his running mate.
The development therefore introduces a legal question over the status of the ADP’s presidential ticket as the country moves towards the 2027 elections. The court’s eventual determination will be important in establishing whether the party’s primary and subsequent nomination complied with the relevant legal and electoral requirements.
At present, the allegations contained in Chukwuka’s suit remain claims before the court and should not be treated as established facts until determined through the judicial process.
The case adds another layer to the political and legal processes surrounding the 2027 presidential election, with the ADP ticket now subject to judicial scrutiny.
ADP presidential aspirant Johnson Chukwuka has sued the party and INEC over Abbas-Bin Aliyu’s emergence as the party’s 2027 presidential candidate, challenging the validity of the primary and nomination process.
