AfCFTA Pushes Africa Toward Value Addition, Urges End to Raw Material Exports for Sustainable Industrial Growth.

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has renewed its call for African countries to reduce dependence on exporting raw materials and instead prioritize value addition, manufacturing, and industrial processing as a pathway to long-term economic transformation.

Speaking on the future of Africa’s economic integration, AfCFTA officials stressed that the continent can no longer rely on exporting unprocessed minerals, agricultural products, and other natural resources while importing expensive finished goods. According to the Secretariat, retaining more stages of production within Africa would create jobs, strengthen industries, boost intra-African trade, and improve the continent’s global competitiveness.

The AfCFTA Coordinator noted that industrialisation remains central to the success of the free trade agreement, arguing that value addition across key sectors including agriculture, mining, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing will enable African economies to capture greater economic value from their natural resources.

Experts have long maintained that Africa’s heavy dependence on raw commodity exports exposes many countries to volatile global prices while limiting opportunities for technological development, skills transfer, and wealth creation. Processing raw materials locally is expected to diversify economies, increase export earnings, and reduce reliance on imported finished products.

The AfCFTA, which is the world’s largest free trade area by the number of participating countries, was established to deepen economic integration, eliminate trade barriers, and expand trade among African nations. Policymakers believe that strengthening regional value chains will help member states maximize the benefits of the agreement while accelerating industrial development across the continent.

Economists also argue that achieving this vision will require substantial investment in infrastructure, energy supply, transportation networks, financing for local industries, technology adoption, and policies that encourage manufacturing and cross border trade. Improved collaboration among African governments and the private sector is also seen as critical to unlocking the full potential of the AfCFTA.

The renewed call aligns with broader efforts by African leaders and development institutions to shift the continent from being primarily a supplier of raw commodities to becoming a global hub for value added production, innovation, and industrial growth.
