Akwa Ibom Police Launch Manhunt After Woman Is Lured to Her Death Over Afang Leaves.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators behind the killing of Unwana Okon, a woman allegedly lured to her death in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
Okon, a resident of Ndot Village, was reportedly invited to Mbiaikot Village through a telephone call from an unidentified individual under the pretext of purchasing afang leaves, a popular indigenous vegetable commonly consumed in southern Nigeria.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the incident was reported to the police at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, by the victim’s brother, identified as Eno.
The police said Okon honoured the invitation but was subsequently found dead. Her mobile phone and an undisclosed amount of money were reportedly taken by her assailants.
The circumstances surrounding her death, including the identity of the caller and the motive behind the killing, remain subjects of investigation.
Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare has ordered a comprehensive investigation and directed that the case be transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters to the Command’s Violence Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for specialized and coordinated investigations.
The unit is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder, identify those responsible and ensure their arrest and prosecution.
The police command condemned the killing and assured residents that all available operational and investigative resources would be deployed to apprehend the perpetrators.
It also appealed to residents of Oruk Anam and neighbouring communities to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or any information that could assist investigators.
Members of the public with credible information have been encouraged to contact their nearest police station or communicate directly with the Akwa Ibom State Police Command through its established channels.
The killing has renewed concerns about personal safety and security within local communities, particularly the vulnerability of residents to criminal schemes involving deceptive invitations and seemingly ordinary commercial transactions.
While investigations continue, the identification and prosecution of those responsible will be crucial to securing justice for Unwana Okon and reassuring residents that violent crimes will not go unpunished.
Obaland Magazine will continue to monitor developments as the police investigation progresses.
