Anambra Land Dispute Deepens as Umuawulu Monarch Accuses Land Grabbers, Calls on Soludo to Restore Lasting Peace.
The traditional ruler of Umuawulu Kingdom in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, has attributed the prolonged land dispute affecting the community to the activities of alleged land grabbers, urging Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo to intervene decisively to prevent further escalation.
Speaking on the lingering conflict, the monarch maintained that unauthorized land acquisitions and competing ownership claims have continued to fuel tensions within the community. He expressed concern that the dispute has disrupted social harmony, strained relationships among residents, and created uncertainty over legitimate land ownership.
Igwe Egwuonwu appealed to the Anambra State Government to strengthen existing mechanisms for resolving land related conflicts through lawful and transparent processes. He emphasized that swift government intervention would help protect community interests, uphold the rule of law, and discourage individuals or groups allegedly exploiting the situation for personal gain.
Land ownership disputes remain a recurring challenge in several communities across southeastern Nigeria, where rapid urban expansion, rising property values, and overlapping traditional and legal land claims have contributed to prolonged conflicts. Stakeholders have consistently called for stronger land administration systems, improved documentation, and effective mediation to reduce disputes and promote sustainable development.
The monarch also appealed to residents to remain peaceful, cooperate with lawful authorities, and avoid actions capable of worsening the situation while awaiting government intervention. He expressed optimism that constructive dialogue and adherence to legal procedures would pave the way for a lasting resolution.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Government had not publicly responded to the monarch’s latest appeal.
