“Anambra Lawmaker Oby Orogbu Expands Constituency Empowerment Drive With Skills, Scholarships and Livelihood Support”

AWKA, Anambra State The member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Prof. Lilian Oby Orogbu, has continued to expand her constituency intervention programmes, focusing on skills development, education, livelihood support and initiatives aimed at improving economic self-reliance among residents.

The empowerment drive, which has reached more than 500 constituents through various programmes, forms part of Orogbu’s broader approach to constituency representation, with emphasis on human capacity development alongside infrastructure and social interventions.

Reports on the lawmaker’s constituency activities indicate that beneficiaries have received support through skills acquisition initiatives, business empowerment, agricultural assistance and educational interventions. Her programmes have targeted groups including youths, women, traders, farmers and other vulnerable residents of Awka North and South.

Education has also remained a prominent component of the interventions. Orogbu has facilitated educational support for indigent students, including payment of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) fees and scholarships for outstanding students. Her constituency initiatives have also included efforts to improve learning environments through the renovation of school facilities.

A 2026 report by THIS DAY highlighted several of the lawmaker’s constituency interventions, including road projects, the installation of more than 500 solar-powered streetlights across communities, a 500KVA transformer donation and educational support involving JAMB fees and scholarships. The report also noted empowerment initiatives for traders, widows, youths and farmers.

Earlier reporting by Nigerian Tribune documented Orogbu’s claim that more than 200 households had benefited from her empowerment efforts within her first six months in office. Punch similarly reported the 2023 claim, noting that the lawmaker described the interventions as part of efforts to address hunger and economic hardship among constituents.

The latest empowerment drive reflects a wider debate in Nigeria over the role of constituency projects and political representation in reducing poverty. While direct distribution of livelihood assets can provide immediate relief and help beneficiaries establish small businesses, development experts and civil society organisations have consistently stressed the importance of sustainable programmes that create skills, jobs, access to finance and long-term economic opportunities.

Orogbu’s approach has increasingly combined material assistance with education, vocational development and infrastructure. This is significant in a constituency where many residents depend on small businesses, agriculture and informal economic activities for their livelihoods.

The lawmaker has also used her position in the National Assembly to promote initiatives relating to corporate social responsibility and technical and vocational education. Her constituency record has subsequently attracted public recognition, including a 2026 nomination and later recognition connected to the Anambra Man of the Year Awards.

For residents, the central question will be whether empowerment interventions can translate into sustainable livelihoods beyond the immediate distribution of equipment, grants or other forms of assistance. Continued monitoring of beneficiary outcomes, transparency in selection and measurable evidence of economic impact will remain important in assessing the long term value of such programmes.
