BEDC Workers’ Strike Triggers Blackout Across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti.
Electricity supply has been disrupted across Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti states following industrial action by workers of BEDC Electricity Plc under the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).
The workers reportedly shut down BEDC facilities in the early hours of Wednesday, October 21, 2026, disrupting operations at the company’s headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, and other operational locations.
At the Benin headquarters, the protesting workers allegedly blocked the entrance, preventing other staff from gaining access to the premises and shutting down key operational facilities.
The industrial action has affected electricity distribution operations across the four states covered by BEDC.
Workers Demand Better Wages and Improved Welfare
The workers’ protest centres on several unresolved labour issues, including salary harmonisation, implementation of the national minimum wage, promotion delays and concerns over job security.
Their major demands include:
- Salary harmonisation: A fairer and more consistent salary structure for workers.
- National minimum wage: Full implementation of the approved national minimum wage.
- Staff promotion: Resolution of prolonged delays in workers’ career advancement.
- Job security: Concerns over the reported threat of mass retrenchment.
- Improved welfare: Review of other staff benefits, allowances and emoluments.
The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) reportedly declared support for the workers’ action, backing their demands for improved working conditions and better welfare.
NUEE Accuses Management of Failing to Address Demands
According to information surrounding the dispute, NUEE had issued BEDC management a 14-day ultimatum to address the workers’ grievances, followed by an additional seven-day grace period for negotiations.
The union reportedly proceeded with the industrial action after the extended period elapsed without a satisfactory resolution of the outstanding issues.
BEDC management, however, reportedly expressed surprise over the strike, telling Vanguard that the company had recently reviewed workers’ emoluments.
The differing positions highlight the disagreement between the electricity distribution company and its employees over whether recent adjustments adequately address the workers’ concerns.
Closed Door Meeting Holds in Benin City
As of Wednesday evening, BEDC management and NUEE representatives were reportedly engaged in a closed-door meeting in Benin City to discuss the dispute and explore a possible resolution.
The Edo State NLC indicated that the outcome of the meeting would influence its next course of action.
The immediate priority remains resolving the dispute and restoring normal operations to minimize the impact on electricity consumers and businesses across the affected states.
Residents Await Restoration of Electricity
The disruption has raised concerns among residents, businesses and other electricity consumers in Edo, Delta, Ondo and Ekiti, where the industrial action has affected BEDC operations.
A prolonged shutdown could further inconvenience households and businesses that depend on regular electricity supply for their daily activities.
As negotiations continue, consumers await an agreement between BEDC management and the workers’ union that could bring the industrial action to an end and facilitate the restoration of normal electricity distribution.
