  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Di Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, don reduce di kontri monetary policy rate from 26.5 per cent to 23 per cent.

Di decision happen on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, afta di Monetary Policy Committee, MPC, meeting wey CBN hold to look di state of Nigeria economy, inflation, money market and oda economic conditions.

Di latest reduction mean say CBN don cut di benchmark rate by 3.5 percentage points, or 350 basis points, from di 26.5 per cent wey di committee maintain for July 2026.

Di Monetary Policy Rate, wey pipo dey call MPR, na one major rate wey CBN dey use to influence how much moni dey cost for banks to borrow and lend. When CBN reduce am downward, e fit make kbese reduce, although di actual effect for bank loans no dey happen automatically and e fit take time before businesses and ordinary customers begin feel am.

Before dis latest decision, CBN don keep MPR for 26.5 per cent since July. For di 306th MPC meeting wey happen July 20 and 21, 2026, di committee maintain di rate at 26.5 per cent.

Dis time around, di decision come when inflation pressure for Nigeria don begin cool down. BusinessDay report before di meeting say Nigeria headline inflation had slowed for three straight months, while food inflation also recorded a decline.

Nigeria inflation rate for August 2026 fall to 15.39 per cent from 15.43 per cent for July, while food inflation reduce to 19.57 per cent.

Di reduction also come afta CBN survey show say many households and businesses dey ask for lower interest rates because of di high cost of kbese and doing business. The 60.9 per cent of pipo wey respond to CBN August 2026 Inflation Expectations Survey support lower interest rates, while 11.7 per cent prefer increase and 27.4 per cent want di rate remain di same.

For businesses, lower policy rate fit create beta conditions for access to credit if banks eventually reduce di rates wey dem charge pipe for kbese. Small businesses, manufacturers and oda companies wey depend on bank loans fit potentially benefit if di reduction dey properly pass through from monetary policy to commercial lending.

But di reduction no mean say every Nigerian go immediately get cheaper loans. Commercial banks still dey consider dia own funding cost, risk, liquidity, operating expenses and oda conditions before dem set lending rates. So, di real effect of di CBN decision for customers go depend partly on how banks respond.

Di decision also dey come against di background of gradual easing wey don dey show for parts of Nigeria financial market. Earlier for September, Treasury bill rates don fall across some maturities, while CBN had continued to manage liquidity inside di banking system.

CBN rate decision dey ok no be only for banks but also for households, businesses, investors and government because monetary policy fit affect borrowing, investment, savings, inflation and economic activity.

Di central bank still get di difficult job of balancing two major concerns: controlling inflation and allowing businesses and households get better access to credit. If borrowing cost remain too high for too long, businesses fit struggle to expand and invest. But if monetary conditions become too loose too quickly, inflation pressure fit return.

Di latest 23 per cent rate mark major change from di 26.5 per cent position wey CBN maintain just two months earlier. TheCable report describe di new 23 per cent level as di lowest since February 2024.

For Nigerians, di main question now na wheda di lower policy rate go reduce small kbese, beta business activity and more accessible credit. Di answer go depend on how banks transmit di policy decision into di wider financial system and how inflation, exchange-rate conditions and economic activity develop for di coming months.

Di CBN decision too show say monetary policy for Nigeria dey enta anoda stage as policymakers respond to changing inflation and economic conditions. Future MPC meetings go determine weda di current reduction na one major adjustment or part of a longer period of monetary easing.

Obaland magazine go continue to monitor how di new 23 per cent MPR affect bank lending rates, businesses, consumers, inflation and Nigeria wider economy.

CBN don reduce Nigeria monetary policy rate from 26.5 per cent to 23 per cent as inflation pressure dey cool and policymakers look for better balance between price stability and economic growth.
