Como produced a commanding performance to defeat Manchester United 4–1 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, October 21, piling further pressure on United manager Michael Carrick after another disappointing display.
The Italian side dominated at the Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia, with Argentine midfielder Nico Paz delivering an outstanding performance, scoring twice and providing an assist to help secure an emphatic victory.
Paz opened the scoring in the second minute with a curling effort that left United struggling to recover. Despite their attempts to respond, the visitors failed to contain Como’s attacking movement and intensity.
Como extended their advantage four minutes into the second half when Paz played a precise pass to Anastasios Douvikas, who finished confidently to make it 2–0.
Paz struck again in the 57th minute, capitalising on a defensive error before driving forward and finishing clinically to put the hosts firmly in control.
United’s defensive problems continued as Como added a fourth goal in the 76th minute. Substitute Kaiki Bruno delivered a cross that defender Jacobo Ramón headed into the net, completing a memorable night for the home side.
Manchester United managed a late consolation through Joshua Zirkzee, who scored in stoppage time after receiving a cross from Amad Diallo. However, the goal did little to change the outcome of a match in which Como had clearly outperformed their opponents.
The defeat extended United’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions, intensifying scrutiny of Carrick’s leadership and the team’s performances. United also have work to do in the Champions League league phase after collecting only three points from their opening three matches.
For Como, the result represents a significant European statement under manager Cesc Fàbregas. Their organisation, pressing and clinical finishing exposed United’s weaknesses and demonstrated their ability to compete against one of Europe’s most recognisable clubs.
