LAGOS — A Magistrate’s Court in Lagos has granted bail to popular Nigerian TikToker, Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, four days after his arrest for allegedly obstructing police officers.

Peller was released on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, on a bail bond of N500,000. He was arraigned alongside one Bello Oladipo on three counts relating to resisting police officers and breaching public peace.

Viral Video of Police Confrontation Sparks Fresh Debate on Law Enforcement and Youth Rights in Nigeria

The streamer had been in police detention since Friday, July 3, following a viral confrontation in the Lekki area of Lagos.

According to police reports, the trouble began on Friday when officers stopped Peller over allegations of driving a tinted vehicle without a plate number.

A video that circulated online shortly before his arrest showed the content creator in a heated exchange with the officers. In the clip, Peller accused the police of harassing him, claiming he had just purchased the vehicle and was still processing its documents.

He further alleged that during the encounter, an officer pulled his shirt, pointed a gun at his head, and insisted he be taken into custody. The video quickly went viral, sparking debate online about police conduct and the treatment of young Nigerians by law enforcement.

Following the incident, Peller was taken into custody. He was later transferred from the Lekki police division to the Ikeja Police Station, where he spent the weekend in detention before being arraigned.

The prosecutor told the court that the actions of the defendants created tension at the scene and interfered with police operations. The defense counsel, however, argued that the arrest was excessive and that Peller had cooperated after the initial confrontation.

After hearing arguments from both sides, the magistrate granted bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum. The surety must be a Lagos resident with verifiable means of identification.

Peller, 20, is one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing TikTok and streaming personalities. Known for his comedic skits, live streams, and energetic personality, he has amassed millions of followers across TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms.

His arrest drew widespread attention online. Fans and fellow creators took to social media to call for his release, with the hashtag #FreePeller trending over the weekend. Some users criticized the police for what they described as heavy-handedness, while others argued that everyone, including influencers, must obey traffic and police directives.

Human rights advocates also weighed in, noting that while obstruction of police is an offense, the use of force and detention must follow due process.

The case has reignited discussions about interactions between young Nigerians and the police, particularly in Lagos. Issues such as stop-and-search procedures, tinted vehicle permits, and the use of force have been contentious for years.

The 2020 #EndSARS protests highlighted public frustration over alleged police brutality and harassment. Since then, the Nigeria Police Force has introduced several reforms and training programs, but incidents involving viral videos continue to fuel public scrutiny.

Legal experts say the charges against Peller will test how the courts balance law enforcement authority with citizens’ rights to record and question police actions.

“The law expects cooperation with police officers, but it also expects officers to act professionally and within the law,” said a Lagos-based lawyer who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Videos like this put both sides under the microscope.

With bail granted, Peller is expected to return to court on the adjourned date. If convicted, the offenses carry penalties ranging from fines to possible jail time, depending on the magistrate’s ruling.

For now, the TikToker has been released and is expected to continue with his online activities while facing trial.

In a brief statement after his release, shared by associates on social media, Peller thanked fans for their support and said he would “let the law take its course.” He did not comment further on the details of the caseCourt Grants TikToker Peller N500,000 Bail After 4 Days in Police Custody

The Nigeria Police Force has not issued a detailed public statement on the matter beyond confirming the arrest and arraignment.

As the case proceeds, it is likely to remain a talking point among young Nigerians who follow Peller and other creators, and among advocacy groups monitoring police-civilian relations in the country
