Dangote Refinery Extends ₦2.15 Trillion IPO Deadline to October 27 to Attract More African Investors.

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has extended the deadline for its ₦2.15 trillion initial public offering (IPO) by two weeks, giving prospective investors more time to participate in the landmark share sale.

The offer, which opened on September 14, 2026, was initially scheduled to close on October 13 but will now remain open until October 27, following approval from Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

According to the company, the extension follows strong interest from eligible investors across Africa and other markets. It is also intended to broaden participation by improving access to the offer for investors outside Nigeria.

In a notice published on October 12, the refinery explained that the additional time would support efforts to expand distribution channels and introduce depositary receipt programmes to facilitate cross border investment.

The company added that the extension would allow prospective investors more time to complete account opening, identity verification and other regulatory requirements.

₦2.15 Trillion Share Offer Targets Wider Ownership

The IPO comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 per share, representing a potential fundraising value of approximately ₦2.15 trillion if the entire offer is subscribed.

The share sale is designed to widen public ownership of the refinery, which is majority-owned by Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote. The company has expressed ambitions to attract millions of retail investors from Nigeria and other African countries.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, David Bird, said the extension would provide more investors across the continent with an opportunity to participate in the company’s future growth.

The offer is also expected to support the refinery’s expansion plans, which include increasing its existing processing capacity and strengthening its position in the regional and international petroleum markets.

However, the extension does not, on its own, establish the final level of subscriptions or confirm the amount ultimately raised. The outcome will depend on completed applications, the final allocation process and applicable regulatory requirements.

African Investment Opportunities and Market Access

The decision to extend the IPO highlights the opportunities and challenges associated with encouraging greater African participation in major industrial investments.

Although investors across the continent have expressed interest in the offer, differences in national regulations, investment platforms and financial market infrastructure can complicate cross-border participation.

Reuters reported that the refinery’s share sale has exposed some of these barriers, particularly for investors seeking access from outside Nigeria. Expanding distribution arrangements and introducing depositary receipt programmes could help address some of these challenges.

The development also comes amid broader efforts to deepen African capital markets and mobilize domestic savings for large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects.

For Nigeria, a successful offer could strengthen the role of its capital market in financing private sector expansion. For other African economies, the initiative could provide an opportunity to explore investment partnerships beyond their domestic markets.

Nevertheless, broader participation will depend on accessible investment channels, clear regulatory arrangements and investors’ ability to assess the risks associated with the offering.

What Investors Should Know

With the new deadline set for October 27, prospective investors have an additional two weeks to review the offer documents and complete the application process.

Investors should consult the refinery’s official IPO documentation and relevant regulatory guidance before making financial commitments. Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission has also advised prospective investors to use only officially approved subscription channels and to verify platforms before submitting personal or financial information.

The extension represents an opportunity to widen participation in one of Africa’s most significant industrial share offerings. Its longer term significance, however, will depend not only on the amount raised but also on whether it helps create more accessible and integrated investment markets across the continent.
