Davido sues Sophia Momodu for Imade’s custody

Davido, the internationally acclaimed singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, has taken legal action against Sophia Momodu, the mother of his first child, Imade, in a bid to obtain custody of their daughter. The legal motion, filed by Davido’s lawyers at the Lagos State High Court, seeks “an order granting joint custody of Miss Imade Adeleke to the applicant.” Alternatively, Davido has requested “an order granting to the applicant unfettered and unrestricted access to Miss Imade.” The case, marked LD/1587PMC/2024, lists Mr. David Adedeji Adeleke as the applicant and Ms. Sophia Momodu as the sole respondent.

In the affidavit supporting the motion, Davido stated that while he had a previous relationship with Momodu that resulted in the birth of their child on May 14, 2015, the relationship had ended several years ago. However, both parties had agreed to co-parent their child. Davido asserted that he had been fulfilling his responsibilities as a father by paying for his daughter’s school fees and providing financial support for their living arrangements. He even went as far as purchasing a luxurious apartment worth N200 million in a gated community for the mother and daughter, an offer that was declined.

Davido further claimed that he had provided vehicles for Momodu’s use, including a Range Rover Sport Utility Vehicle and a Highlander SUV. He also committed to covering various expenses, such as living expenses, nanny fees, medical care, and international travel expenses for their daughter. Despite his efforts, Davido accused Momodu of making unreasonable demands and causing him unnecessary pain.

This recent legal action is not the first instance of conflict between Davido and Sophia Momodu. In 2021, Momodu revealed her disappointment when their daughter took Davido’s last name instead of hers. She expressed her distress on social media, stating that she was upset that her daughter did not bear her last name, “Momodu.” However, Momodu’s mother explained that it was customary for a child to bear the father’s last name to ensure their inclusion in the father’s lineage and inheritance.

The case between Davido and Sophia Momodu highlights the complexities and challenges of co-parenting. As the legal battle unfolds, the court will ultimately decide what is in the best interest of Imade, their daughter.
