Delta 2027: NDC Governorship Candidate Chris Iyovwaye Demands Transparency, Accountability and More Jobs.

The 2027 governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State, Chris Iyovwaye, has called for greater accountability, transparency and job creation, urging the state government to demonstrate how public resources are being converted into measurable improvements for residents.

Iyovwaye made the call in a statement issued on Friday in response to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s Independence Day message, in which the governor urged Nigerians to embrace sacrifice, courage and patriotism. The NDC candidate argued that such values should also be reflected in government spending, public services and development programmes.

A central part of Iyovwaye’s statement was his demand for greater transparency in the management of Delta State’s revenues and allocations from the Federation Account. He asked the state government to publish a breakdown of how funds received between 2023 and 2026 were spent, including how much of the 2025 Federation Account windfall went into capital projects intended to create jobs compared with recurrent expenditure.

The candidate also identified the state’s ports as potential drivers of employment and economic activity. According to Iyovwaye, the Warri, Koko, Sapele and Burutu ports could support significant employment if their economic potential were properly developed. He specifically said the facilities could provide jobs for up to 50,000 Deltans, a projection that represents his campaign’s stated estimate rather than an independently verified employment figure.

Iyovwaye further linked effective governance to the delivery of basic public services, including roads, clean water, functioning hospitals and adequate school infrastructure. He argued that democratic governance should be assessed not only through elections but also through tangible outcomes experienced by residents.

On workers’ welfare, the NDC candidate acknowledged the Delta State Government’s reported increase of the minimum wage to N77,500, while maintaining that rising living costs remained a concern for workers. He subsequently called for what he described as a “reset” centred on transparency, industrialisation, job creation and accountable governance.

His latest comments form part of a broader campaign message focused on economic diversification and industrial development. In a September interview with ARISE News, Iyovwaye described Delta as having significant industrial potential and argued that revitalizing existing industries could strengthen economic activity and create employment opportunities.

The candidate’s campaign platform, known as Delta Vision 2035, also identifies economic prosperity, industrial development, technology and innovation, agriculture, healthcare and transparency in governance among its proposed areas of focus. The campaign says its governance proposals include open budgets, public dashboards and audits as mechanisms for improving accountability.

Iyovwaye emerged as the NDC’s governorship candidate following the party’s Delta State primary held in May 2026, with his candidacy subsequently affirmed by the party’s National Executive Committee, according to Vanguard.

As the 2027 Delta governorship contest develops, issues surrounding public revenue management, employment, infrastructure, industrialisation and the delivery of social services are emerging as recurring themes in the political debate. Iyovwaye’s latest intervention places accountability and measurable economic outcomes at the centre of his campaign message.
