“Don’t Let Economic Hardship Destroy Your Marriage Kogi Lawmaker Urges Nigerians Amid Rising Cost of Living”

A lawmaker from Kogi State has called on Nigerians to safeguard their marriages against the pressures of worsening economic hardship, stressing that resilience, mutual understanding, and emotional support remain critical to sustaining family stability.

Speaking amid growing concerns over the rising cost of living and its social impact, the legislator warned that financial strain should not be allowed to erode the foundation of marital relationships. He emphasized that while economic challenges are real and widespread, couples must resist the temptation to allow hardship to fuel conflict, resentment, or separation.

According to the lawmaker, marriages built on love, trust, and shared values are better equipped to withstand difficult times. He urged couples to adopt open communication, patience, and faith as coping mechanisms, noting that financial instability is often temporary, but the consequences of broken homes can be long-lasting.

“Economic hardship is a test, not a verdict on your marriage,” he stated, adding that couples should work together as partners rather than adversaries during challenging periods. He also encouraged families to prioritize emotional connection over material expectations, warning that unrealistic financial pressures can worsen domestic tensions.

Nigeria has faced sustained economic challenges in recent months, including inflation, currency fluctuations, and increased living costs. Analysts say these pressures have had ripple effects on households, contributing to rising stress levels and, in some cases, domestic disputes.

The lawmaker’s remarks align with broader calls from religious leaders, social advocates, and family counselors who have repeatedly highlighted the importance of unity and resilience within households during economic downturns. Experts note that financial stress is one of the leading contributors to marital conflict globally, making proactive communication and shared problem-solving essential.

In addition to advising couples, the legislator urged government institutions and community leaders to strengthen social support systems that can help families navigate economic uncertainty. He stressed that policies aimed at easing economic burdens would also play a role in promoting social stability and protecting family structures.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with economic reforms and their short-term impacts, stakeholders across sectors are increasingly drawing attention to the human dimension of the crisis particularly its effect on family life.
