  • The Edo State Government has debunked claims by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) alleging that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved N6 billion as compensation to so-called “Fulani terrorists” following the recent Uromi killings. In a strongly-worded statement on Thursday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, described the accusation as a reckless falsehood designed to incite ethnic conflict and destabilise the peace of Edo State. The controversy stems from the events of 28 March, when sixteen hunters from Kano State were killed in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi. In the aftermath, Governor Okpebholo visited Kano to sympathise with the families of the victims and appeal for calm, while a delegation from Kano later travelled to Edo to engage in peace discussions. IPOB, in a statement released on 21 April, alleged that the Governor had secretly approved a N6 billion compensation package to appease the bereaved families a claim which the Edo State Government swiftly dismissed as baseless and inflammatory. “There is no truth whatsoever in the claim that Governor Monday Okpebholo approved or paid N6 billion to any group,” Itua said. “This is a fictitious and malicious lie concocted by IPOB to sow seeds of discord and destabilise the harmony we have nurtured in Edo State.” The government warned that IPOB’s repeated attempts to manipulate public sentiment and incite ethnic hostility under the cover of activism would not succeed in Edo State. “It has become a known tactic of this proscribed group to exploit tragic situations to spread hate and misinformation,” the statement added. “Their agenda of violence and ethnic disintegration has no place here.” Emphasising its commitment to unity, security and justice for all residents, the Edo State Government reaffirmed its stance against any form of ethnic or religious discrimination. The statement also urged security agencies to investigate the source of the inciting publication and prosecute those behind it, stressing that public order and peace must not be jeopardised by dangerous propaganda. “We remain resolute in our commitment to justice, peace and the protection of all Edo people, regardless of background,” the government declared. “We will continue to uphold the values of unity, tolerance and truth in the face of reckless attempts to destabilise our state.”

Nigeria intensifies containment efforts as health minister says public events will continue unless scientific evidence warrants restrictions

The Federal Government has quarantined high-risk contacts linked to Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola case while ruling out an immediate ban on political rallies and other large public gatherings, saying any restrictions will depend on scientific evidence and expert advice.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed the measures during a media briefing in Abuja as authorities intensified efforts to prevent the virus from spreading into the wider community.

According to the minister, health officials have identified and assessed people who may have been exposed to the infected patient, including healthcare workers, household contacts and individuals connected to medical facilities where she received treatment. Those classified as high-risk contacts have been placed in designated quarantine facilities, while others are being monitored under public health supervision.

The government has activated its incident management system, with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) coordinating the operational response alongside the Federal Capital Territory authorities and other relevant agencies.

Addressing concerns about the potential impact of the outbreak on political campaigns, conferences and other major gatherings, Pate said the government had not found sufficient public health grounds to suspend planned events.

He stressed that the decision did not rule out future restrictions if the epidemiological situation changed.

The minister explained that any subsequent measures would be based on public health assessments, scientific evidence and consultations with relevant experts rather than political considerations.

The clarification comes amid concerns that Nigeria’s confirmed Ebola case could trigger restrictions on public activities as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The government has urged political leaders and members of the public to avoid spreading unverified claims about the outbreak, warning that misinformation could undermine containment efforts and create unnecessary public anxiety.

Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in more than a decade on October 20, 2026, after laboratory tests established that a woman who had recently travelled to Nigeria was infected with the virus.

The patient was admitted to a private hospital in the Federal Capital Territory after developing symptoms. She is receiving medical care in isolation while authorities investigate her movements and identify people who may have come into contact with her.

The Federal Government initially announced that 44 close contacts had been identified. Officials have since continued tracing and assessing potential exposures as part of efforts to interrupt possible chains of transmission.

The patient’s travel history has also prompted investigations into where she may have contracted the infection. Although she travelled through Uganda, the precise location of exposure has remained under investigation, with officials cautioning against drawing conclusions before the evidence is established.

The government has also strengthened coordination between federal and state authorities and mobilised additional technical support to reinforce the national response. Hospitals have been advised to maintain appropriate isolation arrangements, improve infection prevention and control measures, and promptly report suspected cases.

Pate urged Nigerians to remain calm, follow public health guidance, cooperate with contact-tracing teams and avoid circulating unverified information. He also called on private healthcare providers to work closely with public health authorities, given the role of medical facilities in detecting and reporting suspected infections.

The outbreak has raised concerns beyond Nigeria, with health authorities monitoring its spread across several African countries. The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, and investigations are continuing to establish possible transmission links and strengthen containment measures.

For now, the Federal Government’s position is that planned public gatherings can proceed, but that position could change if new evidence indicates a greater risk to public health. The effectiveness of contact tracing, quarantine compliance and early detection will remain central to preventing further transmission.

Nigeria quarantines high-risk Ebola contacts as the Federal Government rules out an immediate ban on political rallies and large gatherings, pending scientific evidence.
