The Edo State House of Assembly has passed a ₦939.85 billion supplementary appropriation bill for the 2026 fiscal year, with capital expenditure accounting for ₦588.32 billion of the proposed spending.
The Edo State House of Assembly has approved a ₦939.85 billion Supplementary Appropriation Bill for 2026, following deliberations on a report presented by its Standing Committee on Appropriation, Budget and Project Monitoring.
The bill, presented by Governor Monday Okpebholo, was passed during plenary after lawmakers considered the committee’s recommendations and approved the report during proceedings of the Committee of Supply.
The supplementary budget allocates ₦588.32 billion to capital expenditure and ₦351.53 billion to recurrent expenditure. The capital allocation represents the larger share of the proposed spending, while recurrent expenditure covers the costs associated with running government operations.
The committee’s report was presented by its chairman, Fada Eigbiremonlen, who represents Esan Central Constituency. Following the bill’s passage, Speaker of the House, Yekini Idaiye, directed the Clerk, Yahaya Omogbai, to transmit clean copies of the legislation to Governor Okpebholo for assent.
The passage followed earlier legislative consideration of the supplementary budget, which had been referred to the relevant committee for scrutiny. During the earlier debate, lawmakers discussed proposed allocations for road infrastructure and electricity projects, among other sectors. However, the earlier reports referenced a ₦77.5 billion proposal, and the precise relationship between that figure and the subsequently passed ₦939.85 billion bill requires clarification from the official budget documents.
The governor’s assent will be the next formal step in the legislative process. The budget’s eventual impact will depend on how the approved allocations are implemented, the projects funded and the government’s ability to account transparently for public expenditure.
