Edo entertainers defeated the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, 5–0 in a novelty football match organised as part of activities marking the 10th coronation anniversary of Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin.
The match, held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, brought together entertainers, journalists and local government football teams in a sporting celebration of the monarch’s decade on the throne. The event was sponsored by QSL Gas and Power.
The entertainers dominated the opening encounter, demonstrating superior teamwork and attacking ability against the NUJ team led by its state chairman, Dr Festus Alenkhe. Despite the journalists’ efforts, they could not find a response to the entertainers’ five goals.
In the second match, Oredo Local Government Area Team defeated Orhionmwon Local Government Area Team 2–1 in a closely contested encounter. Both sides displayed determination, but Oredo secured the victory before the final whistle.
The event was attended by Chief Osaro Idah, the Obazelu of Benin Kingdom, who represented the Oba of Benin and led other dignitaries to the stadium. Those present included former Edo State Deputy Governor, Chief Lucky Imasuen; NUJ Edo State Council Chairman, Dr Festus Alenkhe; and Director-General of the Edo State Orientation Agency, Malek Idowu Monye. Members of the coronation anniversary planning committee, traditional chiefs and football enthusiasts also attended.

He noted that the novelty matches reflected the values of unity, youth engagement and collective celebration associated with Oba Ewuare II’s reign.
Alenkhe congratulated the entertainers on their victory, explaining that the NUJ participated primarily to honour the monarch. He also reaffirmed the union’s commitment to the anniversary activities, citing the cordial relationship between the Benin Palace and the media.
Monye described the competition as an effective way to engage young people while promoting peace and cultural pride. QSL Gas and Power, the event sponsor, said its participation reflected its commitment to celebrating the Benin monarchy and its cultural significance.
Spectators welcomed the matches and called for more sporting events to be included in the anniversary programme.
