The Edo State Government has commenced a statewide operation to identify, evacuate, and rehabilitate mentally unstable persons roaming the streets, as part of efforts to address growing concerns over public safety and social welfare.

f by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, who described the initiative as a humane intervention aimed at restoring dignity to vulnerable individuals while improving safety across the state.
Speaking at the flag-off, Abdallah stressed that the exercise goes beyond a routine cleanup, noting that it is designed to provide care, shelter, and rehabilitation for persons in need of mental health support.
She added that the operation would be conducted in line with human rights standards and established social welfare protocols.
According to her, the initiative will be sustained through periodic operations across the state, targeting individuals found loitering in public spaces, while ensuring they receive appropriate treatment and support.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Joy Ihensekhien, was present alongside staff of the Rehabilitation Department, who are responsible for coordinating the exercise and ensuring proper assessment, rehabilitation, and reintegration of affected persons.
Also speaking, the Director of Rehabilitation, Sylvester Okoeguale, said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to tackle homelessness and mental health challenges in the state.
He noted that many individuals on the streets require urgent medical attention and structured support, which the government is prepared to provide.
Okoeguale added that the operation will be carried out in phases across the three senatorial districts to ensure comprehensive coverage and effective implementation.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations and urged residents to support the exercise by reporting cases and cooperating with officials.
