The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area due to security concerns in the area.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo; Ososo Comprehensive High School, Ososo; and Makeke Secondary School, Makeke.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the decision was taken as part of the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of citizens, particularly students, teachers, and other school personnel.
The government said all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended indefinitely pending further directives.
However, students currently writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will still be allowed access to their examination centres under strict security arrangements involving school authorities, security agencies, and community leaders.
Principals of the affected schools have been directed to ensure the safe release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities and property during the closure period, maintain communication with relevant government and security agencies, and comply with any further directives issued by the state government.
The government also urged parents, guardians, and residents of the affected communities to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to maintain peace and ensure public safety.
The statement assured residents that necessary measures are being taken to address the security situation and facilitate the safe resumption of academic activities as soon as possible.
