The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has marked the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day with the distribution of free sanitary pads and menstrual hygiene education to female students of Benin Technical College, Benin City.
Led by its Chairperson, Comrade Habiba Sam, members of the association’s executive council visited the school where they engaged the students in an interactive session on menstrual health and hygiene while also providing them with sanitary pads.
Speaking during the outreach programme, Comrade Sam said the initiative was part of NAWOJ’s commitment to promoting the welfare of the girl child, amplifying the voices of women, and supporting vulnerable groups in society.
She urged the students not to feel ashamed or inferior because of menstruation, describing it as a natural and healthy part of growing up.
“Do not feel less of yourself when you are menstruating. It is a normal and healthy part of growing up. The key is to maintain cleanliness by bathing regularly, changing your sanitary pad every four to six hours, and wearing clean underwear. This helps prevent infections and keeps you comfortable,” she said.
The NAWOJ Chairperson encouraged the girls to prioritize their health and personal hygiene during their menstrual cycle, stressing that menstruation should never hinder their education, confidence, or self-esteem.
Responding on behalf of the students, Miss Favor Oghara expressed appreciation to NAWOJ for the gesture, noting that the sanitary pads and health talk would go a long way in helping the girls manage their menstrual health effectively.
She said the session helped to dispel common misconceptions about menstruation and reinforced the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and confidence during their monthly cycle.
NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to supporting girls and women through advocacy, education, and empowerment programmes aimed at promoting healthy and dignified living.
